Once regarded as a bigger talent than Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli has seen his world coming crashing down over the years. Having last played for India 22 years ago, the once elegant left-hander is now hunting for a job, knocking the doors of the MCA and other boards.
“I am a retired cricketer, who is completely dependent on the pension from the BCCI. My only payment at the moment is from the Board, for which I am really thankful and grateful. It takes care of my family,” Kambli told Mid-Day in an interview.
However, this lone income is not going to be enough for him and his family with expenses on the rise almost every day. Just to make it even more tougher, Kambli resides in Mumbai, which is said to be one of the most expensive cities as well.
“I went to the MCA for some help. I have a family to look after. I told the MCA many times that if you require me, I am there whether it is at the Wankhede Stadium or at BKC. Mumbai cricket has given me a lot. I owe my life to this game.”
These is surely a difficult time for Kambli, who at one point, was known for his flashy lifestyle with the golden chain around his neck. That may still be there with him, but the glitter might have been rubbed off due to the current situation.

Vinod Kambli is a childhood friend of Sachin Tendulkar and first came into the limelight after an unbroken partnership of 664 runs with Sachin in a school match. Kambli, also coached by Ramakant Achrekar, the left-hander made his Test and ODI debuts in 1991 and 1992 and was in and out of the Indian team for the better part of the decade.
Kambli played 17 Tests scoring 1084 runs at an average of 54, with three fifties and four centuries. He had a longer rope in ODIs, playing 104 games scoring 2477 runs. Kambli was part of India’s World Cup squads in 1992 and 1996. He averaged 32.59 in the 50-over format, with 14 fifties and 2 centuries to his name.
Kambli last played for India in the year 2000 in an ODI against Sri Lanka. He was known for his flashy lifestyle during his time as an India cricketer, wearing gold chains and earrings while being pictured at night outs.
After his career, Kambli did have a fledgling acting and coaching career, but nothing lasted long enough for the left-hander to be financially stable. The former India player also appeared in reality TV shows and coached in Sachin’s Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy between 2018 and 2022.
