Valencia vs Atlético Madrid: LaLiga Santander season, the very best might be saved for last. There was late drama in both duels last season. Their first clash of 2021/22 also took place at Mestalla and Atleti were leading 3-1 as the match entered stoppage time. However, a pair of 92nd and 96th minute goals from Hugo Duro saw Los Che fight back for an incredible 3-3 draw, in front of an incredulous home crowd.

The rematch then produced an even wilder ending as Valencia CF were leading 2-1 in the capital and heading for a shock win, but Ángel Correa equalised in the 90th minute before Mario Hermoso ventured forward from central defence to smash in a dramatic 93rd minute winner.

Even in previous seasons, the meetings between these two historic clubs were also thrilling right until the final whistle. Over the past 10 clashes between these outfits, only one of them saw the sides separated by more than one goal. It is always close when Valencia CF and Atlético de Madrid square off, making the three points on offer so valuable.

This Monday’s three points will also be very important for both clubs after their mixed starts to the new season. Both won their Matchday 1 fixtures before falling to defeat in Matchday 2, so neither side will want to suffer what would be a second consecutive defeat.

The first time Gattuso and Simeone meet as coaches Gennaro Gattuso has lofty ambitions for Valencia CF and wants to get points on the board early on, especially at home. “I loved the passion of the fans here and you can tell that they’re going to help us a lot when we play here,” the Italian coach said of Mestalla after his first game there, a 1-0 victory over Girona FC.

This Monday’s match will be just the third in LaLiga Santander for Gattuso, whereas it’ll be the 405th in the coaching career of the man in the away dugout, Diego Simeone. This will be the first ever time that these two former midfielders meet as coaches, but they do know each other from their time as players in Serie A. They met on the pitch between 1998 and 2001, when Gattuso played for Salernitana and AC Milan and when Simeone represented Inter Milan and Lazio.

Now, these two former midfielders will hope to make an impact from the sidelines and will urge their squads to play with the same passion that they used to put into every match they laced up for.

Sparks certainly will fly with talents such as Carlos Soler, Marcos Llorente, Hugo Duro and João Félix involved, while Valencia CF’s Samuel Lino will look to prove himself against his parent club. Valencia CF hope to end the drought
For Valencia CF, they’ll also hope for victory on Monday night because it would end what is a 15-match winless run against Atleti. There have been a lot of close contests during that run, made up of nine Atlético de Madrid wins and six draws, but this is the longest win drought for either side in the history of this series and Los Che will look to end it as quickly as possible.

Their form against Simeone’s side does look better when just considering meetings as Mestalla, given that four of the past five battles between these sides at LaLiga Santander’s oldest stadium have finished as draws, along with just one Atleti win. But, Valencia CF fans hope they and Gattuso will be savouring all three points come full time on Monday.
