- Nadal missed the US Open last year due to a knee injury and also did not participate in 2020 edition owing to Covid concerns. He was the champion in 2019 and hopes to repeat that performance.
- He returned from the knee injury earlier this year and started the year with a 21-match win streak in which he won the Melbourne Open, Australian Open and Mexican Open title.
- His first defeat this year came at the Indian Wells Masters this year as he lost the final to Taylor Fritz.
- He then started the clay court season at Madrid Open where he reached the quarterfinal. At the Italian Open, he faced second round defeat by losing to Denis Shapovalov.
- He began his French Open campaign this year and defeated the then World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal. He went on to win the title after defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets.
- He was aiming for a hat-trick of Grand Slam title at Wimbledon but bowed out from the tournament by withdrawing before the semifinal against Nick Kyrgios after suffering an abdominal injury.
- He took a month to recover and only the Cincinnati Masters before the year end Grand Slam US Open where he lost in three sets in the second round against Borna Coric.
- Rinky Hijikata is ranked 198th in the world and received a wildcard to the tournament.
- The Australian started the year by bowing out from the first round at Melbourne Open. At the Australian Open he couldn’t reach the main draw and bowed out from the second round of the qualifiers.
- He won three ITF titles this year before the Wimbledon. He failed to make it to the main round at the Wimbledon after losing in the third round of the qualifiers.
- Just before the Wimbledon, he reached the second round at Los Cabos Open and lost to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Nadal vs Hijikata Head-to-Head: Both the players will be facing each other for the first time in their career and Nadal enters the contest as the overwhelming favourite. Nadal is playing at a level that could challenge even the best of the players and the World No.198 Hijikata is by no means is expected to give even a tough fight to the second seed.
