US Open 2022 LIVE: US Open, which is the season’s final Grand Slam tournament is currently underway at New York. The tournament’s first round came to an end on Tuesday and in just two days, the Grand Slam tournament has seen some of the biggest upsets with top seeds crashing out from the marquee event. Players like defending champion Emma Raducanu, fourth seed Stefanos Tsitspas and seventh seed Simona Halep have all bowed out from the tournament after the first round. Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu’s title defence at the US Open 2022 came to a crashing end as she suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Alize Cornet in the first round at the Flushing Meadows on Tuesday night. Raducanu came out of the blue last year at New York in what was her second grand slam appearance as she won 10 matches in total, including the qualifiers to win her maiden Grand Slam title. However since then, Raducanu has suffered in her maiden full WTA Tour this year. While her form hasn’t been great, her body too did not cope up as she suffered numerous injuries. She failed to go past the second round in any Grand Slam tournaments this year and was placed in a very tough quarter this year. Alize Cornet was expected to give a tough fight and the Frenchwoman did exactly the same as she stormed past the defending champion with utmost ease. Withe the loss Raducanu’s ranking will slide down outside the Top 70 in the world.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
World No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas entered the US Open this year as one of the contenders for the title having shown good form in the lead up to the tournament. The Greek finished as runner-up at the Cincinnati Masters just before the year end Grand Slam and was looking to win his maiden Grand Slam title. He was drawn against qualifier Daniele Galan in the first round and he went into the contest as the favourite. However World No.94 Galan stunned the Tennis world with his performance as he won the first set 6-0 and went on to lead the second set 5-0. Tsitsipas managed to win a game in the second set to avoid being double-baggled for the first time in his career. Tsitsipas came back to win the third set but Galan didn’t allow the Greek to settle as he won the fourth set to give Tsitsipas a first round thrashing. It was the Greek’s first first round defeat at the US Open ince 2019.
Elena Rybakina
Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina suffered a shocking first round defeat at the US Open as she went down in straight sets against qualifier Clara Burel. Rybakina was the 25th seed in the tournament and after her Wimbledon heroics she was expected to make a deep run in the tournament. She entered her first round contest as the favourite but 21-year old Burel kept on challenging the Wimbledon champion and both the players broke each other once but Rubel had the last laugh by breaking Rybakina once more in the first set to win it 6-4. In the second set the Frenchwoman dominated completely as Rybakina had no clue and conceded the second set to crash out from the first round. With this victory, World No.131 advanced to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
Simona Halep
Simona Halep was the seventh seed in the tournament and Tennis fraternity hoped that the Romanian would be one of the contenders for the US Open title this year. The two-time Grand Slam winner faced Ukraine’s qualifier Daria Snigur in the opening round and was the overwhelming favourite. However Snigur started off brilliantly by breaking Halep in the very first game and went on to give a tough fight. Soon Halep was broken twice and the Romanian failed to make a comeback as she lost the first set 6-2. In the second set, Halep showcased her class as she didn’t allow Snigur to settle to win it 6-0 and took the game into the decider. Halep however couldn’t maintain her momentum as Snigur displayed terrific fightback to clinch the biggest victory in her career as Halep’s US Open campaign came to an end in the first round.
Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz who won the Indian Wells Masters title earlier this year defeating Rafael Nadal in the final, entered his home Grand Slam event with lot of expectations on his. The American was the 10th seed and he faced his compatriot Brandon Holt in the first round. Holt was a qualifier who was making his debut in a main draw in a Grand Slam event. Holt challenged Fritz right from the start and forced the first set into the tie-breaker which Fritz managed to win. The fight continued between both the players and the second set too went into the tie-break but this time Holt won it 7-1 to level the contest. From then on, Holt managed to find his footing in the contest as he won the next two sets comfortably to pull off an upset victory over the 10th seed.
