Umran Malik in Test Squad? Umran Malik has been on an upward climb in India cricket. Just few matches in domestic cricket and a couple of IPL seasons, the pacer from Jammu and Kashmir has rocketed to the Indian team in the limited overs format. However, former India wicketkeeper, Saba Karim believes, he should be included in India Test team squad as well.
Karim believes India cricket has never seen a bowler like Umran with such kind of a pace. He sees no reason why Malik should not play for the current Indian Test team.
“Umran Malik has that rare quality of pace. You can add more variety, more control, more discipline to his bowling – which will happen – one has never seen this kind of speed ever in the Indian set-up,” Karim had said on TOI Sportscast.

“If we have someone like him, what are we waiting for? If you ask me I would get him in the Test squad. Just play him, because he has had 2-3 years of experience in First Class cricket plus IPL, which means that he is not raw.”

He consistently clocked an impressive 150kmph last season and troubled some top Indian batters with his sheer pace. He bowled the fastest 14 deliveries in the IPL last season, showcasing his consistency.

Umran and his pace

- He registered fastest 14 deliveries in IPL 2022
- His fastest delivery came against Delhi Capitals last year, clocking an impressive 157 kmph

Things have not gone according to plan in India colours: But to be fair, things have not gone according to plan at the international level despite his pace. He has played three T20I matches for India, and has just taken two scalps. Umran has gone at a economy rate of 12.44 in these matches, which does not look good. There is a lot to be done in his bowling for him to get into the Test arena.
More importantly, with the kind of pacers India possess, it would take something extraordinary to seal a Test berth. Even the likes of Prasidh Krishna has not even made his Test debut.
