Sonalben Patel came close to pulling off a monumental win over world No 4 and Rio 2016 silver medallist Qian Li. Patel forced a fifth game in a five-set thriller but couldn’t carry her momentum as she began her campaign with a 3-2 defeat. Sonalben will go again tomorrow at 17.10 IST as she will take on Korea Lee Mi Gyu in Class 3 Group D.
Paralympics Table Tennis: Sonalben got off to a great start as she claimed a sensational first game to kick off the proceedings at the Tokyo Paralympics. However, Li Qian showed her class and brushed the Indian paddler off in Game 2, before Sonalben bounced back to claim a heroic Game 3 win, clinching it by 17-15. However, the world No.4 held her nerve and got the better of Sonalben in the next two games to take the game 3-2 in Tokyo. World No.19 Patel will now look to bounce back on Thursday when she faces Mi Gyu, who won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games.
