Tokyo Olympics: Japan to track foreign journalists with GPS at Tokyo Games – Foreign journalists covering Tokyo Olympics will undergo strict surveillance at Tokyo Olympics. However, unlike Hong Kong and China’s political motives, they will be monitored for their movements to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 in Japan during the Summer Games.

The Games President, Seiko Hashimoto, said that if anyone found breaking rules, the reporter’s accreditation will be revoked immediately. Despite initial concerns, around 6,000 journalists have been approved to visit Tokyo during the Olympics which is set to begin on July 23. The movement restrictions of journalists come at a time of growing concerns among Japanese citizens over the virus.

To satisfy its citizens, the Japanese Olympic Organising Committee has set a few rules for journalists after refusing to host overseas spectators.

The 6,000 journalists who will visit the country for Tokyo Olympics will be put in designated hotels instead of privately rented accommodation. Furthermore, they will be monitored by tracking technology to restrict their visits to sports venues and hotels during the first two weeks.

“To make sure that people don’t go to places other than the places where they are registered to go, we will use GPS to strictly manage their behaviour,” Hashimoto said before a Tokyo 2020 executive board meeting.

Furthermore, the number of hotels originally planned for visitors will be reduced to 150 from 350 to keep them under supervision. However, that’s not restricted to journalists alone. The athletes will also be subjected to movement restriction besides daily testing for the virus.
