India’s first Olympic medal

Norman Pritchard, who took part as a private individual, won the first-ever Olympic medal ‘Silver’ in Men’s 200-meter race more than a hundred years ago during the 1900 Paris Olympics. He was born to an English family who has settled in Kolkata, India.  He replicated his feat twice during the same Olympic event. Sushil Kumar is the only Indian to win two Olympics medals- Bronze and Silver- in two separate Olympics.

Individual champions

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav ended India’s Olympic medal drought in 1952. The wrestler won a bronze medal in the freestyle bantamweight category as Independent India won its first Olympic medal. India waited another 4 decades to win second individual Olympic glory when Tennis star Leander Paes bagged a bronze medal in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics.

Ever since India has improved at individual events at every edition. Shooter Abhinav Bindra became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics 2008 edition. Boxer Vijendra Singh and wrestler Sushil Kumar won a bronze medals during the same year.

India’s best-ever performance came in 2012 London Olympics where six athletes secured podium finish- Mary Kom (Boxing), Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar (Wrestling), Saina Nehwal (Badminton), Vijay Kumar (Shooting). However, India failed to do well at the Rio Olympics managing just two medals.

Hockey India

India won its first Olympic goal in the country’s national sport after a long wait of 28 years in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Major Dhyan Chand scored 14 goals- the highest in the tournament. India went on to dominate and win the Gold in 1932 (Los Angeles), 1936 (Berlin), 1948 (London), 1956 (Helsinki), 1956 (Melbourne), 1964 (Tokyo), 1980 (Moscow). The country now aims to end its wait of 41 years.
