Speaking to the Times of India on Thursday, Team India head coach Ravi Shastri expressed his delight and welcoming MS Dhoni on board and believes that the team couldn’t have asked for anything better heading into the T20 World Cup. Shastri said, “The team couldn’t have asked for anything better. The BCCI has thought this out extremely well and put the plans in place. Having MS Dhoni in the dressing-room and the dugout will be a huge shot in the arm for the boys. It’s a great move.”

Shastri further added, “We all know what experience he brings to the table. What more can the team ask for? When I first heard from the secretary, I was absolutely thrilled at the idea. In the end, it’s about India’s aspirations, not individuals. In that, we should look to put our best foot forward.”

The idea to bring Dhoni in was taken by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, stemmed from the fact that the former Indian skipper will be in the UAE for Phase 2 of the IPL 2021. It is largely believed that the tournament will be Dhoni’s final swansong, with Mahi now into his 40s. Despite that, sources noted that he remains one of the most astute leaders on the field, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) currently second in the table. Dhoni and Shastri’s combination has been termed as “fire and ice” off the field, with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opting the same on the field.
