Panesar highlighted the importance of having Virat Kohli in the team and why he can replicate MS Dhoni as a father figure for the youngsters.
“Virat can play the role of MS Dhoni. He can be a guiding force for the youngsters. Virat does bring so many other elements to the side.
“He didn’t have a good time in the last few months.
“Be it captaincy or anything. Virat and BCCI need to just sort this (out) completely. Rohit and Dravid are making plans to win the World Cup,” Panesar said while speaking to the Times of India.
Adding further on the India’s chances and role of youngsters, Panesar added,
“Dravid and Rohit desperately want to win the World Cup. They want to play big roles and take the team to World Cup wins.
This is something Virat couldn’t (do). They have only three months to go. They’ve got to think with their heads right. Is Virat Kohli part of our eleven or is he part of our 15?
They need to decide that very, very quickly. There are a lot of youngsters who can adapt to the conditions in India, but in Australia, you will definitely need Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup.”

Virat’s tough run in the recent months-
- Virat Kohli hasn’t scored an international hundred for more than two years
- His last hundred came on 23rd November 2019 against Bangladesh on Day 2 of Kolkata Test
- Kohli is already rested for the West Indies and will be next available for the Asia Cup in final week of August
- If Virat misses out on the magical triple figure mark in the ODI series against England, he will have to wait for the Asia Cup.
- The Asia cup will begin on August 27, with the host nation still undecided due to ongoing political crisis in Sri Lanka, who are initially placed to host the Asia Cup.
- India are due to play Sri Lanka in the opening match of the tournament.
- So by the time, Virat next steps on the field after the England tour, he will have passed the 1000-day mark of his century drought.
