World Cup 2022 Format: Check how the format works for T20 World Cup in Australia? West Indies and Sri Lanka will have to go through the pre-tournament qualifiers to make the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 when the tournament kicks off in Australia next year.
Six teams – England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia had already done enough to ensure that they qualify directly.

Afghanistan, the team sitting seventh, cannot drop below 8th spot irrespective of future results in this tournament following West Indies’ loss to Australia.

That loss has seen West Indies drop to 10th on the rankings, just behind Sri Lanka, with Bangladesh rising to eighth.

Alongside West Indies, 2021 Super 12 teams Sri Lanka, Namibia, and Scotland will also start next year’s tournament in the First Round.

West Indies’ loss to Australia saw them slip to 10th, while Sri Lanka dropped to ninth. Bangladesh, who lost to both these teams and failed to win any games in the tournament this year, will start in the Super 12 stage in the T20 World Cup 2022, with their series wins over Australia and New Zealand at home earning them enough rating points.
Afghanistan, who could still make the semi-finals of the current edition, occupy the final automatic spot and are seventh in the ICC T20I Rankings.

It marks a new low for West Indies, who were skittled out for 55 earlier by England in the tournament. The two-time champions now enter into a new era with the retirement of Dwayne Bravo, while talismanic opener Chris Gayle confirmed that he won’t take part in the T20 World Cup 2022.
Sri Lanka meanwhile played the qualifiers and made it to the Super 12 stages, where they registered wins over West Indies and Bangladesh. Dasun Shanaka’s side however had a lot of positives from the tournament, especially given how their youngsters performed throughout the tournament. The two teams will be joined by Scotland and Namibia in the qualifiers, the two teams who made it to the Super 12 stage this year.
