Karthik made heads turn when he scored over 350 runs in IPL 2022 season with a mind-boggling strike rate of 189. It was due to that path-breaking performance that he was recalled in the national setup. But since then, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter has not been able to replicate his IPL heroics with team India. He has scored only one fifty in 20 T20Is in 2022.

“What has Tim David done at the international level? Sometimes, selectors pick players on domestic form, and I think India is a classic example. They are picking Dinesh Karthik ahead of Rishabh Pant… ridiculous! I mean, Rishabh Pant should be playing every game. So, that’s the tendency,” Chappell said on Sydney Morning Herald.
“I’ve been saying to wait on Tim David, let’s play him after the World Cup, get him some international matches. Not just belt the average 120kmh guys, belt the 150kmh guys. Because that’s not so easy,” he further stated.
Karthik has played in four matches at the World Cup so far; while he didn’t get to bat in one, his scores in the other three were 1 (against Pakistan), 6 (against South Africa, and 7 (against Bangladesh). As the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee began the transition process in the shortest version of the game with the 2024 edition in the West Indies and USA in mind, it is likely that Dinesh Karthik would play in his final T20 World Cup at the current tournament in Australia. Karthik was notably ignored in the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand.
