PV Sindhu vs Busanan Ongbamrungphan

Second seed PV Sindhu won her second BWF Super 300 title of the year as she clinched her maiden Swiss Open title. The double Olympic medallist defeated Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 21-8 in just 49 minutes.

Right from the start, Sindhu was on top of her game as she took a 3-0 lead. But her opponent made a quick comeback by levelling the scores 3-3. She continued to challenge Sindhu with her brilliant drop shots to take lead. Sindhu managed to catch up and neck-to-neck battle was on display. However Busanan squandered a shot from Sindhu outside the sideline to enter the break trailing behind by 9-11. After the break Sindhu continued her dominance and never allowed the Thai to take the lead as she won the first set.

In the second game, Sindhu was brilliant with her play as she took a quick 5-0 lead. The game soon became one-sided as the Indian gathered a massive nine-point lead to enter the break with a lead of 11-2. Sindhu continued to challenge her opponent with her smashes and drop shots and under pressure Busanan too made errors that helped Sindhu get 16 match points on her hand. Sindhu however lost four before sealing the game with a smash to get her hands on the Swiss Open trophy. She became only the second Indian women to win the title in Basel after Saina Nehwal won it last in 2012.

  • 16-13 Busanan goes for a drop shot byt it lands in the net as Sindhu takes three-point lead.
  • 13-13 – After brilliant rally, Busanan hits a drop shot that couldn’t be returned back by Sindhu as scores level 13-13.
  • 11-9 Busanan squanders a shot from Sindhu outside the court, that gives the Indian two-point lead by the first set break.
  • 8-9 Sindhu hits two shots wide off the sideline on either side of the court to give her opponent 9-8 lead.
  • 6-5 Sindhu manages to take back the lead by making Busanan play a widish shot that the Thai player could only manage to hit outside the sideline.
  • 3-5 Sindhu could only manage to hit another drop shot in the net.
  • 3-4 Busanan takes lead with a drop shot that falls in front of Sindhu.
  • 3-2 Sindhu hits behind the backline to give her opponent second point.

HS Prannoy vs Jonatan Christie 

Indonesia’ Jonatan ended his three-year title drought by winning a BWF title, defeating India’s HS Prannoy 21-12, 21-18 in the SWiss Open final.

In the opening game World No.8, Jonatan Christie started off on a positive note taking a 4-1 lead by winning three points on the trot. The Indian fought back winning 4 consecutive points taking a 5-4 lead. The World No. 26 Indian led 7-5 at one point but from there on lost his way as the Indonesian won four consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead. At 13-10 lead the World No.8 Christie won seven points consecutively to take a massive 20-10 lead and went on to win the opening game 21-12 to go one game up.

In the second game, both the shuttlers fought neck-to-neck as at one point they were both levelled at 7-7 but from there on Jonatan Christie won four consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead. Trailing 9-13 the Indian made a comeback to make it 13-13. After that, the Indonesian World No.8 made the race away with a 20-15 lead and it all seemed over. Prannoy fought winning three consecutive points but it was too little too late for him as Jonatan Christie won the second game 21-18 and claim the men’s single title of Swiss Open Super 300

  • 12-21 Christie wins first set 21-12
  • 10-20 Prannoy hits away to hand Christie game point.
  • 10-19 Christie gets six consecutive points to inch closer to winning the first set
  • 8-11 Prannoy hits behind the backline as Christie enters the break with a three-point lead.
  • 8-10 Prannoy hits in the net to trail 8-10.
  • 8-8 Christie makes a net-error to help Prannoy level the score
  • 7-8 Christie ends up winning the point with an unorthodox shot between his legs.
  • 4-4 Prannoy came back to level the score 4-4
  • 1-4 Christie took an early lead of 4-1.
