Sushil Kumar Arrested: Murder accused Sushil Kumar could lose Padmashree award – The last three weeks have changed two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar’s life. From a world champion, he has become a murder accused, on the run from police. But things could turn worse if he is proven guilty of murdering Sagar Rana, a former junior national champion wrestler. The Government of India could annul the Padma Shri award conferred to him in 2011.

As per Padma Awards scheme, the President of India has the authority to revoke the award and benefits. As per former home secretary N Gopalaswami, the Ministry of Home Affairs could review the Padma Shri award on a suo motu basis and recommend to the President of India, Ramnath Kovind, to annul the award at the charge sheet state.

Sushil Kumar Arrested: “After a charge sheet is filed, the award may be cancelled by the President. And, in case he is acquitted later, the orders cancelling the award may be withdrawn,” Gopalaswami told TOI.

As per the Padma Award Scheme, “The President may cancel and annul the award of the decoration to any person and thereupon his name shall be erased from the Register and he shall be required to surrender the decoration and the Sanad. But it shall be competent for the President to restore the decoration and the Sanad and to withdraw the orders of cancellation and annulment.”

Sushil Kumar Arrested: WFI in a fix, to decide after discussion with federation chief

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been in a fix to distant itself from two-time Olympics medallist Sushil Kumar’s arrest in the murder case of a junior wrestler Sagar Rana. On Monday, it clarified its stance on the case, saying that guilty will be punished as the governing body is not responsible for matters outside the mat.

In a tweet, WFI said on Tuesday that it would let the law take its course, adding that “the guilty will be punished”.

Sushil Kumar Arrested: “Many of our media friends have asked us then why WFI doesn’t take action against #Sushilkumar & other wrestlers, who are involved in violent activities. We have cleared this before also that WFI has their own rule regulations. We are responsible for the mat area not outside,” the WFI said.

“Our annual Contract list now many senior wrestlers are out. Those didn’t take part in the championship. We have faith in our judiciary system. Nobody is big or small in our law. Doshi ko sajja milegi hi,” it added.

For the time being, Sushil Kumar has been sent to 6-day police custody as the Delhi Police’s crime branch takes over the case. The wrestler is accused of involvement in a brawl at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi that resulted in junior wrestler Sagar Rana’s murder on May 4 mid-night.
