Richard Gasquet and Christopher O’Connell will face each other in the first round of the Miami Open 2023. The winner of this contest will set up clash against second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. Gasquet enters Miami after bowing out from he second round at the Phoenix Challenger. Before the Challenger event, he featured in the Indian Wells Masters and faced second round exit.
Christopher O’Connell entered the main draw at Miami Open after playing the qualifiers. He last featured in the ATP Tour at the Dubai Tennis Championships and bowed out from the second round. His best performance so far this year is making it to the quarterfinal at Qatar Open.
Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Zizou Bergs
Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis will face wildcard entrant Zizou Bergs in the first round. Kokkinakis is a luck loser. The winner of this contest will face Hubert Hurkacz in the second round.
Kokkinakis was the sixth seed in the qualifiers. He however lost against Benoit Paire in the second round of the qualfiiers in three games. Despite the loss, he managed to enter the main draw after a last-minute withdrawal.
Zizou Bergs is ranked 135th in the World and he will face a big challenge against a higher-ranked Kokkinakis in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Dominic Theim vs Lorenzo Sonego
Former US Open Champion Dominic Theim received a wildcard entry in this year’s Miami Open. The Austrian faces Lorenzo Sonego in the first round. Thiem won just a solitary game in the tour so far this year. It came in the Argentina Open, where he bowed out from the second round. Ahead of the Miami Oen, he suffered three straight first round defeats in Rio Open, Chile Open and Indian Wells Masters.
Lorenzo Sonego is looking to win his first match in his American tour this year. He bowed out from the first round at Indian Wells Masters recently. Sonego is a much higher ranked opponent than Thiem and enters the contest as the favourite.
Women’s Singles
Coco Gauff vs Rebecca Marino
No.6 seed Coco Gauff started her 2023 Miami Open campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 second-round victory over Rebecca Marino. Gauff took 1 hour and 12 minutes to pick up victory at her local WTA Tour event and reach the third round for the second straight season. Last year she went one step further into the Round of 16, her career-best Miami Open showing.
Gauff, who turned 19 last week, now holds the record for most match-wins at WTA 1000 events before turning 20, with her 34th at this level coming over Marino. She breaks a stalemate with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who collected 33 WTA 1000 match-wins before she turned 20.
Elena Rybakina vs Anna Kalinskaya
Fresh after winning the Indian Wells Masters, Elena Rybakina looks to continue her form in the Miami Open. Rybakina takes on Anna Kalinskaya in her first match in Miami. Rybakina is the 10th seed and she received a bye from the first round.
Kalinskaya meanwhile clinched a 6-2, 6-23 win against Jimenez Kasintseva in the first round. The Russian’s best performance so far this year is reaching the quarter-final at ATX Open.
