BWF Rankings: PV Sindhu has dropped out of the Top 10 in the world rankings for the first time since 2016. The two-time Olympic medallist has endured poor form in the season so far. Following her second round exit from the Swiss Open much recently, she has dropped down two placed to move out of the Top 10 in the rankings. Sindhu was the defending champion in the Swiss Open. She began her campaign in the tournament with a victory against Jenjira Stadelmann in straight games. However in the second round, the unseeded Sindhu suffered a 15-21, 21-12, 18-21 loss against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardhini.
With the loss, the 27-year old dropped 4,250 points in the rankings. This made her slip two places to 11th spot. She now has 60,448 points against her name. Sindhu has been in the Top 10 since November 2016. She first made it to the elite bracket way back in 2013.
However, following her return from a long injury lay-off after the Commonwealth Games 202, Sindhu has been in poor form. She began the season with first round exit at the Malaysia Open after losing against Carolina Marin. She followed it up with defeats in the first round at Indian Open and All England Open.
Her first round win at the Swiss Open this year was her first victory of the season. She is now set to play in the Madrid Masters, where she is the second seed. The World No.11 is yet again set to face Jenjira Stadelman in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, 29th March 2023.
HS Prannoy is now the only Indian in the Top 10 in singles. The 30-year old is ranked World No.9. Swiss Open champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty maintained their world number six position. In the Women’s Doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remained static at the 18th position.
