Spain first to have Association of Sports Professional Leagues

Football, basketball, handball and futsal leagues’ managements in Spain have joined hands to create their national association.

Spain’s La Liga (premier football league), Liga Endesa (professional basketball division), Liga Asobal (professional handball league) and Liga Nacional de Fútbol Sala (futsal league) have joined forces to create the Association of Spanish Professional Leagues.

The Primera División, commonly known as La Liga and as La Liga Santander for sponsorship tie up with Santander, is the top professional association football division of the Spanish football league system.

The Liga ACB, known as Liga Endesa for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional basketball division of the Spanish basketball league system.

Liga Asobal is the premier professional handball league in Spain. It was founded in 1958 with the name of División de Honor, and rechristened to its present name in 1990.

The Liga Nacional de Fútbol Sala is the governing body that runs the major professional futsal leagues in Spain. It was founded in 1989 and serves under the authority of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The European country’s soccer, basketball, handball and futsal league bodies will work together for the promotion, dissemination and defence of the nation’s professional sports movement.

The LNFS president Javier Lozano has been appointed head of the private non-profit entity, while Ricard Hijós, secretary-general of handball’s Liga Asobal, will join as vice-president.

The association will also collaborate with public sports institutions, the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and other Spanish sports federations, along with any other public or private entity linked to the world of sports at both national and international levels.

The body will also coordinate and safeguard the common interests of its members, while promoting initiatives of support, study, advice and mutual assistance.

Members of the Association of Spanish Professional Leagues’ general assembly and board of directors are to be announced soon.
