Southampton draw Manchester City: A great 90 minutes of football at St. Mary’s comes to a close with Southampton and Manchester City forced to share the spoils of a 1-1 draw. The Saints opened up the scoring in style with a lovely outside-the-boot finish from Walker-Peters, which gave the hosts a lead that would stand for just under an hour. City dominated proceedings and time of possession, sending wave after wave of attack forward and Forster’s clean sheet was ruined on 67 minutes thanks to a headed finish from Laporte thanks to De Bruyne’s inch-perfect delivery. Scorers: Walker-Peters 7; Laporte 65′; Manchester City’s 12-match Premier League winning streak came to an end when they were held to a draw by Southampton on Saturday evening. The league leaders fell behind after seven minutes when Kyle Walker-Peters fired superbly into the far corner to give Southampton the lead.

Armando Broja then thought he’d put Saints 2-0 up when he got in behind the City defence to score in the 23rd minute, but the flag was up for offside. In the 28th minute Broja appealed for a penalty after being brought down in the box by Ederson, but he was again offside.

It took until the 35th minute for City to go close to an equaliser, when Raheem Sterling’s curling effort went just over the bar. Sterling then had a gilt-edged chance to equalise when Phil Foden’s cut-back found him unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box, but he could only shoot straight at Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal.

Southampton almost increased their lead right at the start of the second half, when Jan Bednarek forced Ederson into a save from a corner. Broja then found himself in behind the City defence in the 53rd minute, but Aymeric Laporte got back well to block the shot. From the resulting corner Broja hit the post with a header.

At the other end, Foden stung Forster’s palms with an effort on the volley, before Rodri clipped the top of the crossbar with an effort from range. City then equalised with 25 minutes to go, when Laporte headed home from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick into the box.

De Bruyne then went close to giving City the lead in stunning fashion when his curling drive from outside the box cracked against the post, before substitute Gabriel Jesus rattled the same post with a header.

Southampton are back in action on February 5, when they host Coventry City in the FA Cup. Manchester City are back on the same day in the same competition when they welcome Fulham to the Etihad.
