Russell Domingo Resignation: Bangladesh Cricket Board – Bangladesh received a huge setback on Wednesday (December 28) as coach Russell Domingo has stepped down from immediate effect. The South African’s departure comes after Bangladesh’s 2-0 Test series drubbing against India. Domingo’s tenure officially ran till the 2023 World Cup, but BCB wanted an overhaul in coaching setup. Russell Domingo Resignation: Sridharan Sriram’s appointment as all-format coaching head behind the reason for Domingo’s exit? – Ahead of Asia Cup 2022, BCB appointed Sridharan Sriram as the all-format head coach. Domingo did not really like the move. While he didn’t let his displeasure to the board down, the results started to take a toll on the team. Bangladesh did not qualify for the group stage of Asia Cup , and also had a shocking T20 World Cup 2022. Nazmul also clearly stated that the long-term plan is what the team is looking at it.
“We are moving with a long-term plan and that is not short-term. It is a three to four years plan and if changes are required (to implement those plans) that there will be changes,” Nazmul told reporters.
Why Domingo stepped down from the coaching role with immediate effect?
· Domingo failed to produce results in T20 and Test formats after taking over the head coach role in September 2019.
· While the South African transformed the ODI side, his failure to do so in the other two formats did not go well with BCB.
· Domingo also was not on good terms with the board after Sriram’s appointment as head coach.
· Bangladesh only won the T20I series against Australia and New Zealand at home. In Test matches in 2022, they failed to win even a single series.
BCB also wanted a coach who could influence the team, and have some impact.
· Strained relationships with players also was one of the reasons Domingo stepped down from the coaching role.
