Rajasthan Royals retained their batting stalwarts Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler while investing their faith in young Yashasvi Jaiswal who showcased sparks of his brilliance last year. The trio will form the core of the batting unit, with additional firepower from new additions, with Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer adding further quality to the line-up.

Riyan Parag was also brought back in the auction despite his disastrous returns last season, with the Royals showcasing faith in the young all-rounder’s skills lower down the order. However, the 2008 champions’ batting heavy approach meant that they struggled to plug the all-rounders gap, especially with none of their top five players able to chip in with overs. Jaiswal can certainly roll his arm over, but to rely on the 20-year-old’s bowling would be a bet RR will be hesitant to take.

Who takes the all-rounders spot? – Rajasthan Royals have two former Mumbai Indians recruits in James Neesham and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who could fill into that spot. Coulter-Nile’s pace and the ability to bowl at the death is a welcome plus for the Royals, but having at No.7 would stretch their tail quite a bit. In Neesham, they have a far more reliable batter than the Australian fast bowler, but the Kiwi will have to chip in as the fifth bowling option, with Parag for support as a sixth bowler.

As far as the bowling is concerned, Rajasthan have one of the finest first choice attacks, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal forming an exciting spin duo. They also did well to poach Trent Boult from the Mumbai Indians, while splashing Rs 10 crore to get the services of Prasidh Krishna.
