Federer, 41, has 20 major titles against his name in his illustrious career. Federer has always been regarded as one of the best tennis players to have ever played the sport. Interestingly, this decision comes just a few weeks after Serena Williams announced her retirement as well. If Serena did so by playing in front of her home crowd in the US, Federer will do so at London.

This decision of Federer does not come as a surprise. At 41, he was already in the twilight of his career. Recently also, he underwent a knee surgery. And in the last couple of years or so, Federer has been troubled with injuries. As a result, he could not even feature in competition that he would love to, including the Grand Slams as well.
Considering he has made the decision before the Laver Cup, one can expect a huge crowd to witness him in competitive action for the last time.
“The last three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I have worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I know my body limits. The message has been clear. I am 41 years old , played more than 1500 matches in 24 years.…..Now I must recognize it is time to end my competitive career. The Laver Cup next week will be my last ATP event. I will play tennis in future, but not in Grand Slams and on the tours,” Federer said in a video on social media.
Federer made his Federer made ATP debut at the 1998 Swiss Open in his home country. Ever since, the player gradually rose in stature and is now regarded as one of the best to have even played the sport. From his 1998 debut to 2022, the former world number one has dominated the circuit like no other.
He won an incredible 20 majors, including eight Wimbledon titles. During his prime, he was a giant on the grass, making the green carpet his own, winning titles after titles. He also won the Australian Open title six times and the US Open five times in his glittering career. His 2018 Australian Open title is his last Grand Slam title.
The man from Switzerland was not looked upon as a great clay court player. But Federer did manage to win it once in 2009. He did the final of the French Open four times in his career, though.
Federer is also remembered for the kind of rivalry he set up against some of the current stars of the game. His clashes against Rafael Nadal is one of the most talked about. The same can be said for his clashes against Novak Djokovic. The trio entertained fans with their amazing contest on the court. In fact, they dominated the sport like no other in the last two decades.
If Federer has 20 Grand Slams, Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21) — both of whom are active in the sport — have won more.
Irrespective of the titles, Nadal and Djokovic won, Federer was the most popular. He won hearts of the people with his silky touch. Even some of the players in the circuit grew up idolising him and also happens to be one of the reasons for them to have taken the sport.
Federer thanked many a people, who helped him in his career, including his wife Mirka. She would always be with him at the stands to watch and cheer him on. “She had warmed me up before finals, watched countless matches even whole over 8-months pregnant and has endured by goofy side on the road with my team for over 20 years.”
