EPL 2020-21: Mourinho’s Spurs beat Guardiola’s City 2-0 to go on top: Tottenham Hotspur rode on goals from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso to beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday and storm to the top of the Premier League table.
Interestingly, this is the first time Spurs have topped the EPL table since Jose Mourinho’s arrival.
It was a display of clinical efficiency and tactical discipline by Tottenham that saw them outplay the Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Jose Mourinho’s side took the lead in the fifth minute when both of City’s centre-backs followed Harry Kane. That opened up plenty of space for Son Heung-min to pick up a lobbed pass from Tanguy Ndombele and score.
City had an overwhelming share of possession but accomplished little with it except for a disallowed goal for Aymeric Laporte after Gabriel Jesus controlled the ball with his arm in the buildup.
Giovani Lo Celso stretched Tottenham’s lead less than 30 seconds after coming off the bench when Kane played him in to score on a 65th-minute counter-attack. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris reacted quickly to keep out Laporte’s header late on.
Notably, on the one-year anniversary of Mourinho’s appointment, Tottenham are unbeaten in their last eight league games since losing to Everton on the opening weekend of the season and defeating his rival Guardiola was cherry on the cake for Mourinho.
The Spurs now have 20 points from 9 games are at the top of the table currently, while Man City are 11th in the chart with 12 points from 8 games.
EPL 2020-21: Fernandes scores another penalty as Man Utd register their first home league win of the season: A Bruno Fernandes penalty against West Brom saw Manchester United secure all three points at Old Trafford for the first time in the Premier League this season.
United went into the international break off the back of a 3-1 victory over Everton but they never hit their stride against the winless Baggies, and were perhaps fortunate to come away with all three points.
West Brom had a penalty overturned while the scores were level at 0-0 in the first half, before United were awarded a spot-kick of their own moments later following a handball.
Fernandes was denied from 12 yards but, just as was the case against PSG last month, a retake was ordered as a result of encroachment from the opposing goalkeeper and this time Portuguese lashed into the top left-hand corner for the win.
The Red Devils are currently 9th in the points tally with 13 points from 8 games.
