New Zealand vs West Indies 1st T20I result: James Neesham smashed unbeaten, while debutant Devon Conway hit 41 to help New Zealand beat West Indies by five wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series.
In a rain-hit game, Windies, rode on skipper Kieron Pollard unbeaten 75, to score 180/7 after the match was reduced to 16 overs.
New Zealand were set a revised target of 176 (DLS method) and Neesham and Conway’s helped them win (179/5).
However, it was NZ fast bowler Lockie Ferguson who claimed ‘Man of the Match’ award as he claimed a fifer while giving away just 21 runs.
He became just the second Kiwi bowler to take a fifer in T20Is. The right-arm pacer has raced to 19 T20I scalps from nine games.
Talking about the match, WI started well as the openers amassed 58 runs for the first wicket. However, from there on, they were reduced to 59/5 in no time.
But Pollard and Fabian Allen added 84 runs for the sixth wicket to help Windies reach a solid total.
In reply, NZ were reduced to 63/4, before Devon Conway, Neesham and Mitchell Santner powered them to victory.
NZ vs WI 1st T20I: Records galore for Pollard
- The West Indian captain registered his highest T20I score (75*).
- Pollard’s unbeaten 75 against New Zealand on Friday included eight sixes, the second-most by a No.6 batter in a men’s T20I innings (Shaheryar Butt – 9 for Belgium v Czech Republic, 29 August 2020).
- The big-hitting batsman went past Yuvraj Singh (1,177) and Lendl Simmons (1,189) in terms of T20I runs.
