Ninety-90 Bash:  After T10, Emirates Cricket Board approves new 90-ball tournament to be held in 2022- After T20, T10 and The Hundred, Emirates Cricket Board has approved the idea of 90-ball franchise-based tournament. The opening edition of the Ninety-Bash will reportedly take place next year.

The Ninety-Bash was formally launched in Abu Dhabi on Friday in presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, chairman of ECB, who gave permission for the tournament. Khalid Al Zarooni, vice-chairman of ECB, Aref Al Awani (General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, also graced the launch with their presence.

Abdul Rehman Bukhatir, chairman of the Bukhatir Group, is the man behind this initiative with his son Khalaf Bukhatir. He transformed Sharjah from desert to hub of world cricket in 80s and 90s. Khalaf co-owns Karachi Kings in Pakistan Super League with Salman Iqbal. Imran Chaudhary, MD of the Dubai-based Cinergie group of companies is also behind the idea.

Well-known global businesses have shown interest to be part of the Ninety-Bash which claims to include iconic cricket stars and emerging players.

“This new exciting format could be instrumental in creating a brand new fan base for the sport, not just in the UAE, but across the globe,” added Bukhatir told Gulf News.

“The proposed Ninety-90 format will be shorter than Twenty20 cricket, with the aim of making every contest sharp, edgy and action-packed, while retaining the importance of cricket skills at the core of its success,” Iqbal added.

The report added that the league will be an annual affair with Sharjah as host.
