NBA Draft 2020: The NBA Draft Combine is an annual event wherein college basketball players are assessed and undergo several medical examinations. They are also interviewed, made to perform various athletic tests, and shooting drills.
There are five-on-five drills for an audience of National Basketball Association (NBA) coaches, general managers, and scouts that also happen in the NBA Draft Combine. The teams invite athletes to workout and perform drills in order to assess their performances for the upcoming draft.
An athlete’s performance during the NBA Draft Combine can affect judgment, draft status, salary, and ultimately the player’s career in the long term.
The athletic tests include a standing vertical jump, maximum vertical jump, bench press, three-quarter-court sprint time, lane agility time, and modified event time. Physical measurements include height with shoes, height without shoes, wingspan, weight, standing reach, body fat, hand length, and hand width.
The shooting tests include spot-up three-point field goals from various distances (high school, college, and NBA) depending upon position, shooting off the dribble, and timed jump shots on the move.
The new format for the NBA Draft Combine 2020:
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the dates for all the events were pushed back. This also affected the way NBA Draft Combine was conducted this year. The new Combine continues to provide NBA teams with player evaluation possibilities during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The President of the NBA League Operations, Byron Spruell said “NBA Draft Combine is an essential part of the pre-draft evaluation process. While the circumstances surrounding this Combine are unique, we’re excited to creatively deliver a valuable experience for our teams, who have remained flexible through the process, and for prospective draftees who are just beginning their NBA journeys.”
In the new innovative format, the NBA incorporated a mobile basketball training application to provide analytics and record shooting evaluation portion of the NBA Draft Combine 2020.
Additionally, the NBA has expanded the use of “Combine HQ” to create a one-stop-shop for scouting information off all the players on the court. Using this, the scouts will be able to compare players before finally deciding who to pick in the NBA Draft on the 18th of November.
