Notably, Sharma went for a very weird approach as he bowled Tilak Verma, Murugan Ashwin and Jaydev Unadkat in the first three overs. The plan backfired as LSG scored 27 runs off those three overs, and the five-time IPL winning captain was then forced to bring on Bumrah, who conceded only 3 runs in his over.

MI vs LSG LIVE SCORE: Fabian Allen gets BIG breakthrough of Quinton de Kock after he brought up 50-run stand with KL Rahul: Follow IPL LIVE Updates

Commentators Danny Morrison and Sunil Gavaskar found the decision baffling as they felt Bumrah should have been unleashed way before. “It’s baffling. For me, it’s your best bowler to start the first over against the best opposition batsman KL Rahul. You are bringing in a wrist-spinner (M Ashwin) against a left-hander (De Kock). Why will you hold back your best bowler for 4th over?” asked Morrison. Gavaskar did not have an answer though, as he replied “I don’t understand either.”

KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock are a deadly opening pair, who are in good form this season. In four games before facing Mumbai Indians, the duo has brought up two 50+ partnerships. Against Mumbai too they built another 50-run opening stand.

Sunil Gavaskar continued to question the decision of Rohit Sharma by saying “Mumbai with no wins under their belt should be experimenting but starting with an off-spinner when you have the number one bowler in T20 cricket in your ranks is hard to understand.”

Gavaskar felt that Mumbai missed the trick by not attacking KL Rahul particularly with Bumrah. Earlier this season, Rahul had already got out twice on the first delivery he faced when he played against Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals. “You can give the second over to the off-spinner no doubt about it, but you should have attacked the man (KL Rahul) who got out twice in the first ball of the innings this season with your best bower,” lamented Gavaskar.

LSG’s opening partnership was finally broken by Fabian Allen, who is making his Mumbai Indians debut. In the sixth over of the innings, Allen trapped Quinton de Kock lbw and the batsman walked back without even reviewing the decision, agter scoring 24 runs off 13 balls.
