This summer, Lionel Messi wants to go back to Barcelona, according to his father and agency. In Saturday’s shocking 3-2 loss to Clermont, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, 35, made his final appearance for Paris Saint-Germain. During his time in France, Messi won back-to-back Ligue 1 championships, but he now has his sights set on an unbelievable comeback to his old team.

On Monday morning, Barcelona president Joan Laporta met with Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, to discuss the potential of a free transfer. The 65-year-old acknowledged his son’s desire to link up with the Blaugrana once again after the encounter.

Jorge Messi said, ‘Messi wants to return to Barca and I would love for him to come back. It is an option.’

Messi enrolled in Barcelona’s renowned La Maisa programme in 2000 when he was just 13 years old. He rose through the ranks, and five years later, he got his first professional contract and started to appear frequently for the first squad.

He later made 778 appearances for the dominant La Liga team, contributing to 303 assists in addition to 672 goals. The Argentina international joined PSG in a £25 million transfer after being forced to leave Barcelona in 2021 due to the club’s financial situation.

Xavi and Rafael Yuste on Lionel Messi’s return

The Argentine spent his whole life at the club, before having to make the move to PSG in 2021. Barcelona’s vice-president Rafael Yuste has said Barca has been in contact with Lionel Messi and his agent and has confirmed Barca’s interest in bringing Leo back.

Yuste said, ‘Leo and his family know the affection I have for them. I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result. I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club. Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.’

Additionally, manager Xavi stated that the club is in “permanent contact” with his former teammate, suggesting a comeback may be forthcoming. Xavi said, ‘Messi knows that Barcelona is his home and the doors are open, I said this many times. He’s my friend — we are in permanent contact, a potential return will only depend on him. Leo is the best player in history, he’d always fit in.’
