Lagardère Sports and Entertainment chief executive Andrew Georgiou has been roped in by Discovery-owned Eurosport as president.

The appointment to the key position is announced almost a year and a half after incumbent Peter Hutton had left the sports channels and streaming service for Facebook. Georgiou has been leading Lagardère since 2014. He had joined Lagardère in 2006 as a COO.

Georgiou as the Eurosport president will be having wider responsibilities than Hutton. In addition to the Eurosport responsibility, he will also oversee sports rights and marketing for the Discovery network. The network licenses the Olympics rights in Europe, has partnership with the PGA on a golf streaming service.

He will report to JB Perrette, president and CEO of Discovery International. Georgiou would bring a “strong commercial and entrepreneurial passion and track record” to Discovery, said Perrette. “He’s the ideal person to lead the continued expansion of Eurosport and help find new ways to bring Discovery’s unparalleled multi-screen capabilities and assets to work for rights holders and marketers across the globe,” he added.

“I admire how Discovery is using its leadership position with Eurosport to revolutionize the company’s approach to delivering sports content across all media channels,” Georgiou said. “The company’s ambitious plans to change the way fans consume sports [that] ‘they can’t live without’ is an exciting journey to be part of.”
