La Liga: Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Alberto Noguera tips Los Rojiblancos to win La Liga title- In the last six seasons, the title race in the Spanish La Liga has been between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. But this time, Atletico Madrid have been dominant in the Spanish league. With the Los Rojiblancos leading the La Liga table again, former Atletico midfielder, Alberto Noguera, who is now at FC Goa in the Indian Super League, believes Diego Simeone’s men will win the title this time.
“I am really happy for them (Atletico). This season was very important for them and they are doing great. I am sure that they will win the La Liga title,” Noguera, who played under Simeone at Atletico Madrid for a season (2011-12) before leaving for English club Blackpool, told InsideSport.
With 55 points from 22 matches, Atletico have opened up a 6-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga standings with a match in hand. Before this season, Diego Simeone’s men broke Real Madrid and Barcelona’s nine-year dominance, snatching the title away in the 2013-14 season on the last matchday.
Since then, Atletico have had little success in UEFA Champions League, finishing runners-up twice but not in the La Liga. Their primary problem was in attack as they lacked a proven scorer. With Luis Suarez joining Atletico from Barcelona, Simeone has had his attacking problems resolved.
The former Uruguayan striker is having a stellar season in Madrid with 16 goals and two assists. With reinforcements in defence, Atletico are one of the best defensive teams in Europe. They have conceded only 14 goals in 22 matches the entire season.
Noguera, who is also fighting for the league title with FC Goa, credits Simeone for Atletico’s success. He believes the way the Argentine has pushed his players, has yielded results on the pitch. While the world might see the Argentine as a tough coach who shouts at players from the sideline, Noguera has only good things to say about him.
“He (Simeone) is not a tough person at all. The thing is he is always looking for the team’s best. He is an ambitious person who always pushes the players, gets the best out of them. Sometimes, it is hard but I am happy to have learnt these things from him,” Noguera said.
On Saturday, Atletico will take on Levante at Wanda Metropolitano and a win will take them 17 points clear and closer to their 11th La Liga title.
