Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians

That’s it from us here guys. Thank you for joining us. See you peeps tomorrow again.

MI wins by 49 runs

KKR end with 146/9 after their 20 overs. MI register their first win. KKR get their IPL 2020 started with a 49-run defeat.

KKR need 54 to win off six balls

Excellent over from Pattinson to make up for the run-fest in Bumrah’s fourth as he gives away just three runs off it while bringing Cummins’ little cameo to an end off the second ball.

Cummins’ entertaining cameo as he ends up paying the price while going for a shot too many. Doesn’t get the distance on the slog and ends up getting caught by Hardik at deep midwicket off his compatriot’s bowling. FOW- 141/8

Bumrah goes for 27 runs
KKR need 57 off 12 balls.

Bumrah’s excellent figures get completely ruined in his final over as he gets smashed for four sixes by Cummins, conceding 27 off it to finish with figures of 2/32.

Cummis takes the aerial route

First maximum conceded by Bumrah this innings! Back-of-length ball going down leg, Cummins flicks this over the backward square-leg region. KKR 118/7

KKR need 84 in 3 overs

Pat Cummins is joined by Shivam Mavi with KKR’s fight having now become one to gain respectability. Cummins takes the aerial route and gets a four to long on. Mavi swings and gets a four to midwicket too. KKR-112/7 after 17 overs

KKR 7 down

Seventh wicket down for KKR now as Naik hardly connects while attempting a pull, resulting in an easy catch for Hardik at deep midwicket. FOW-103/7

Two runs and a wicket off Bumrah’s third over

KKR need 94 off 24 balls

Bumrah returns to the attack, seals the game in MI’s favour by getting rid of both Russell and Morgan in a space of a few deliveries. Two new faces at the crease in Naik and Cummins, as Mumbai sniff victory with another four overs to go. KKR-102/6 after 16 overs

Bumrah gets Morgan this time

Eoin Morgan caught behind after a wrong choice of shots as Quinton de Kock makes no mistake behind the stumps. FOW-101/6

Russel gone for 11
2nd Strategic Timeout

Bumrah gets the better of danger man Andre Russel getting him clean bowled for 11. FOW-100/5

100 comes up for KKR

10 off the over as Boult returns to the attack, including a couple of fours off Dre Russ’ bat as Kolkata breach the 100-run mark. KKR-100/4 after 15 overs

KKR need 106 to win off 36 balls

A better over from KKR’s perspective as eight runs are collected off Pattinson’s third over, including a six off the fourth ball. KKR-90/4 after 14 overs

Big one from Morgan!

Eoin Morgan hammers a fuller one from Pattinson for a six – a much needed one for KKR.

James Pattinson is into the attack as Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan are still unable to get going. The Required run rate is climbing higher and higher and is now over 16 runs per over.

Bumrah back in action. Excellent over from Bumrah as he manages to keep the two destructive batters quiet, conceding just four off it. The required rate’s starting to climb now. KKR-82/4 after 13 overs

Pandya takes a stunner!

Superb catch by Hardik Pandya at deep extra cover as Nitish Rana’s innings comes to an end! First IPL wicket for Pollard since wicket, and he picked his 150th appearance in the league to do so. FOW- 77/4

The change of ends for Chahar works in Mumbai’s favour as Chahar traps Karthik LBW off the first delivery to send the KKR captain back. England captain Eoin Morgan walks out to bat next and gets off the mark with a single off the last ball. Just one run off the over along with the wicket. KKR-72/3 after 11 overs

Karthik gone for 30

One of the easier decisions for umpire Gaffaney as Karthik misses the ball completely while looking to slog it towards the leg side, getting trapped plumb in front of off and middle. FOW-71/3

End of 10 overs; KKR-71/2

Pollard returns to the attack, Karthik and Rana, meanwhile opt to rotate the strike between themselves to keep the scoreboard ticking. Kolkata’s run-rate however, is a touch above 7 at the halfway mark, and the two will certainly have to accelerate if they are to keep the required rate manageable; need more 125 runs from 60 balls

1st Strategic Timeout

The right-hand left-hand combination is working really well for KRR at the moment as the MI bowlers are still struggling to find a suitable line. KKR-64/2 after 9 overs

50 up for KKR

Nitish Rana plays a reverse sweep for a boundary. Smart batting from the batsman. KKR cross 50-run mark. KKR-54/2 after 8 overs

Pollard, who had bowled a match-winning spell in the CPL final earlier this month, brought into the attack right after powerplay. He concedes eight off his first over, including a boundary to DK off the second. KKR-41/2 after 7 overs

End of Powerplay!

Spin introduced in the final over of the powerplay as Rohit tosses the ball over to Rahul Chahar. Rana gets off the mark with a six over long off in the third delivery, and keeps the strike with a single off the final delivery. KKR-33/2 after 6 overs

Kolkata lose their other opener off the fifth delivery as Narine gets a nick off a short ball, with de Kock timing his jump behind the wickets perfectly to complete the catch. Nitish Rana walks out to bat next and blocks the final delivery of the over. KKR-25/2 after 5 overs

Narine gone for 9

Sunil Narine tries to hit a big shot, but gets caught behind by Quinton de Kock. He jumps up in the air and grabs it mid-air by one hand. KKR in trouble. Both openers gone. FOW-25/2

Excellent over from Bumrah; just 1 run off the 4th over

Sunil Narine wanted a single but he would be glad now he did not go through with it. It would have been a run out. This is a slow start for KKR and pressure is building now. KKR-19/1 after 4 overs

KKR lose Gill for 7

Boult strikes! Gill departs right after his first boundary, miscuing a pull to offer Pollard an easy catch at midwicket.

KKR are finally off the mark after Narine collects a single off the third delivery. Gill opens his account next ball with a push towards mid on for one run. Narine collects the first six of the innings with a well-timed flick over the square-leg fence off the penultimate delivery. Eight off the over. KKR-8/0 after 2 overs

Trent Boult starts with a maiden

Superb start by Trent Boult. Shubman Gill did not look in trouble but Boult gave him nothing to free his arms. Just the start MI wanted

Narine, Gill open KKR innings

KKR are out to begin the chase. This will be their third highest run chase if they do get there. They’ve got a pretty flexible batting order. Narine and Naik likely to be used as floaters. Which way will they float today? Can Morgan and Russell fire? It’s going to be Narine and Gill to open the innings. Trent Boult bowls the first over.

End of 20 overs; MI-195/5

Kolkata Knight Riders need 196 runs to chase in 20 overs. This is a huge task especially with a dangerous Jasprit Bumrah breathing fire down the KKR openers. We will be back for the chase soon.

KKR lose review

KKR have wasted their DRS but it does not really matter with just four balls remaining. But it is a wide ball and an extra run for Mumbai Indians.

Russell bowls the 19th over. Hardik powers the first ball to long off for just one. Pollard too collects a single off the second ball. And then Hardik on the third ball, gets out hit-wicket. Krunal, the new man in, welcomed with a dangerous yorker. Good stuff from Dre Russ as he takes a wicket and gives away just four. MI-182/5 after 19 overs

Hardik Pandya hit-wicket!

Russel dismisses Hardik (18) in a bizarre manner – hits his own wicket with his bat after backing up too much. FOW-180/5

Rohit Sharma gone for 80

A low full toss from Shivam Mavi – Mavi tried to go for a slow yorker. Rohit Sharma played it full toss, but could not get the connection he wanted. Caught by Pat Cummins in the deep. FOW-177/4

150 up for MI

Massive over for MI; 19 runs off Cummins

Onslaught from Hardik Pandya. Hardik is fresh and he smashed two boundaries in the over to make matter worse for Cummins who already has a terrible figures to show. MI-167/3 after 17 overs

Spot on from Narine; Just 1 run and a wicket

Narine returns and the first ball of the over gets him a wicket. Tiwary gone and Hardik joins Rohit in the middle. He is done with his four overs. Remember that he gave 11 in his first alone and what a comeback this has been from him since then. Just 11 off the next three overs. Just 1 off the last and a wicket. MI-148/3 after 16 overs

2nd Strategic Timeout; MI 3 wickets down

Narine gets Tiwary, knuckle ball, slow off the pitch, Tiwary made room and wanted to go over extra cover but ended up handing a catch to Cummins in that region. He is back to the hut and we go into time out as well. FOW-147/3

End of 15 overs; MI-147/2

Kuldeep continues but he was aware of the fact that Rohit was going to smash him in this over. He kept bowling as per his expectations, a pull off the spinner and then a six over long on. Good over for MI after a very long time. 17 off it. MI-132/2 after 14 overs

Milestone for Rohit Sharma

Kuldeep Yadav bowls a slow andn short one and that was right in Rohit Sharma’s area. He waited and then pulled it miles into the stands. 84 m. 5 sixes now. Needs one more to join 200 sixes club.

Mi on course for 200

Warrier comes back and so does the boundaries! Warrier with an outside-off and Rohit smacks that for a four. As long as the talismanic captain stays on the pitch, MI can easily cross the 200-run mark with the help of his pulls  MI: 115/2 after 13 overs

50 for Rohit Sharma

Suryakumar Yadav run out on 47

Suryakmar Yadav tried to complete the second run after Rohit Sharma pushed for a double. But he failed to make the run. Fantastic throw from Eoin Morgan. Big, big wicket! MI -99/2 after 11 overs

End of 10 overs; MI-94/1

Rohit (45*) and Surya (45*) have played brilliantly after the loss of De Kock to put MI on top and are now on the verge of registering a 100 runs partnership.

Good over from Narine!

Sunil Narine replaces Andre Russell into the attack. He will now bowl from the other end. This is a better over from him, who went for 11 in the first over. He has kept it tighter, not letting either of the two batsmen go big. Just 5 from the over. KKR need more overs like this.  MI-88/1 after 9 overs

1st Strategic Time out; End of 8 overs

uldeep Yadav, left-arm chinaman, comes into the attack now. DK is trying everything to break this stand. He bowls good first three deliveries, pitching it around the off stump line. But then turns to wrong’un, Surya picks it up and smashes this over extra cover for six. Time out called and KKR do need it to regroup. 11 off the over. MI-83/1 after 8 overs

Rohit Sharma vs Andre Russell- 4,6

Andre Russell bowls the same line to Rohit Sharma where he has already struck two sixes. The Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers are not learning from each other. Rohit Sharma is on absolute fire. MI-72/1 after 7 overs

End of Powerplay; 50 up for MI

Last over before the powerplay and Narine has been introduced. And the first ball has been hit away for four runs. Fifty is up for MI and also the 50-run stand between and Surya and Rohit. MI-59/1 after 6 overs

First over for Pat Cummins; goes for back to back sixes!

He starts off with a wide and then a six hit off the first ball by Rohit through his trademark pull. Cummins still trying to find the right length on the track. Rohit finishes the over with a six. Terrible start for Cummins. Fifteen runs off the first over. MI-48/1 after 5 overs

MI pick up 12 runs from 2s and 3s

Great running by both Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav to get 12 runs of Mavi’s over without hitting a single boundary. MI-36/0 after 4 overs

Big over for MI; 16 runs from it

Warrier continues and he almost had Surya on the first ball of the over but to add salt to his wounds, the ball taking the inside edge of the ball ran away for four behind the wickets. Surya then improved his striking and added 12 more in form of boundary. 16 off the over. MI are back on track. MI-24/1 after 3 overs

Wicket Maiden for Mavi

De Kock gone for 1

Shivam Mavi introduced into the attack and he strikes on just his2nd delivery. Length ball, swinging in and QDK wanted to hit it over mid on, but instead he hit in the air, and the man at mid-wicket Nikhil Naik took a safe catch. FOW-8/1

Rohit Sharma launches one over the rope!

An excellent looking first over from Sandeep Warrier, only concedes two runs in the first 5 balls before Rohit Sharma plunders one for a six on the last delivery to get 8 runs from the over. MI-8/0- after 1 over

Aaaand we are underway!

Here we go. De Kock on strrike, Warrier to bowl the first over for KKR.

Captain’s Speak!

Dinesh Karthik: We saw the first game and thought we will make use of that. Good watching teams play. Excited for the tournament, Morgan, Cummins, Russel and Narine are four overseas in this match. Really looking for young guys to coming here and doing their best.

Rohit Sharma: What happened in the past is past. We have taken lessons from mistakes in last game. We focus on not making those mistakes. Having someone like Pollard is nice. He has got heaps of T20 experience behind him. His experience has been crucial for us. We are fielding an unchanged side.
