Jio Women’s IPL T20 Challenge Updates: Supernovas clinch thriller to reach finals; beats Trailblazers by 2 runs

Jio Women’s IPL T20 Challenge Trailblazers vs Supernovas: Two-time champions Supernovas defeated Trailblazers by two runs in a must-win game to enter the finals of the Women’s T20 Challenge here on Saturday.

Opener Chamari Atapattu top-scored with a 67-run knock as Supernovas posted 146 for six after opting to bat. Her splendid knock (67 runs – 48b, 5×4, 4×6) took Supernovas to what proved a match-winning 146 for six against Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Smriti Mandhana’s side made a gallant effort before falling short by two runs. Deandra Dottin (27, 15b, 4×4, 1×6) and Smriti (33, 40b, 2×4, 1×6) had got the side off to a good start before the former fell leg-before to Shakera Selman. Deepti Sharma (43 n.o., 40b, 5×4) and Harleen Deol (27, 15b, 3×4) added 52 for the fifth wicket but it wasn’t enough to take the side over the line.

Earlier, the defending champion may have expected to end up with a bigger score, but losing three wickets in the final over — all through run-outs — didn’t help.

But Atapattu had done enough to ensure that Supernovas was very much in the contest and tournament. The left-hander from Sri Lanka had made 44 in a losing cause against Velocity, but not briskly enough in the opening game. On this night, she seemed determined to score at a better strike-rate and did. With her opening partner Priya Punia (30, 37b, 3×4) struggling early on, the onus was on Atapattu to find the runs.

Breaking the shackles

Though Priya was finding the fielders with amazing regularity — it took her 16 balls to hit the first four — she eventually broke the shackles and added 89 for the first wicket in 12 overs before falling to a fine, diving catch at deep mid-wicket by Deepti Sharma off off-spinner Salma Khatun.

A few balls later, Atapattu reached her fifty, courtesy a misfield by Jhulan Goswami on the boundary. She didn’t need such generosity from the fielders most of the time, though, as she played some lovely strokes all over the ground.

Harmanpreet Kaur made 31 (29b, 1×4, 1×6) to justify her decision to bat first. Trailblazers were then restricted to 144 for five in 20 overs.

Brief Score:

Supernovas: 146 for 6 in 20 overs (Chamari Athapaththu 67; Jhulan Goswami 1/17).

Trailblazers: 144 for 5 in 20 overs (Deepti Sharma 43 not out; Shakera Selman 2/31)

Jio Women’s IPL T20 Challenge Supernovas vs Trailblazers Live Commentary

Supernovas wins by 2 runs

Radha Yadav defends nine runs in the final over to help Supernovas clinch a two-run win and reach the final. Trailblazers have already qualified for the final so they wouldn’t mind the result.

It’s going down to the wire. Deepti started off excellently by finding two boundaries on the first two deliveries. One with a pull shot to deep square leg, second with a slice shot over backward point fielder.

TRL-137/4 after 19 overs; need more 10 from 6 balls

Look at that, Poonam Yadav is finally into the attack with three overs to go! Harleen Deol gets back-to-back boundaries off the last two balls to make it 11 runs of it and give some hope of maybe taking this to the wire.

TRL- 123/4 after 18 overs; need more 24 runs in 12 balls

Radha Yadav continues after the break. Deepti and Harleen are trying out a lot of shots around the park but boundaries are tough to come by here. Still, they got nine from the over. Jemimah had an opportunity to get Harleen out on the last delivery at deep extra cover but she put down a difficult catch, but surely cut off a boundary.

TRL-112/4 after 17 overs; need more 35 from 18 balls

100 up for Trailblazers

Rearguard action from Deepti and Harleen incoming? The duo get a boundary each in the over bowled by their national T20I captain Harmanpreet to make it 12 runs off it. This brings up the 100 for Trailblazers, even as the required rate is 11.

TRL-103/4 after 16 overs; need more 44 runs in 24 balls

Radha Yadav strikes with a lovely delivery as another WICKET falls in the Trailblzers’ chase. Hemalatha is caught behind by Taniya Bhatia, who continues to impress with the gloves.

TRL- 91/4 after 15 overs; need more 56 runs in 30 balls

They needed a good over and here it comes with 10 runs off Selman’s third over. Deepti Sharma gets a boundary and they run a couple of double. Will need a lot more of this from here on.

TRL- 69/2 after 11 overs; need more 78 runs in 54 balls

We reach the halfway mark!

We’re back after the time out and Salma Khatun, right-arm off break, comes into the attack. So far, so good from Supernovas’ opening batswomen. Chamari has been the wrecker in chief. A rare triple off the fifth from Chamari’s blade. Punia nudges the last ball for a single towards long-off. Five runs off the over.

TRL-59/2 after 10 overs; need more 88 from 60 balls

Strategic Timeout taken

Selman to continue. Dot ball first up. Smriti is on strike. She drives the next ball past cover for a single. Dropped. Smriti gets a second life. This time, Priya Punia is the culprit. A single to end the over, four from it. TRA 57/2 after 9 overs; need more 90 from 66 balls.

Shashikala Siriwardene, right-arm off spinner, comes into the attack. By the way, replays suggest the ball would’ve missed leg-stump. Dottin should have reviewed that! A single to end the over. Five off that over. 50 comes up for the Trailblazers. TRA-53/2 after 8 Overs.

TRL-48/2 after 7 overs; need more 99 from 78 balls

TRL go 2 down

Needless from Ghosh. She got carried away with that first boundary, gives the charge looking to go for another and the ball just held its line to beat the outside edge, crashes into middle-stump. Supernovas are right back in the game with this double strike.

TRL lose Dottin on 27

Selman to Dottin. Appeal for LBW and up goes the finger. The decision looks dodgy but they don’t take the review. Dottin does have a chat with her skipper but Mandhana is convinced that is hitting the stumps.

End of Powerplay!

Dottin gets another sweetly-struck boundary to make it 7 runs off the over.
Not as big a Powerplay as Trailblazers would have liked given Dottin’s proclivity for trying to attack everything but a good one with no early wickets.

TRL-43/0 after 6 overs; need more 104 from 84 balls

TRL-36/0 after 5 overs; need more 111 from 90 balls

Anuja continues. Smriti drives handsomely through the covers for four. Harman has dropped Smriti. Good comeback from Anuja – five dots after conceding a boundary off the first ball.

TRL-26/0 after 4 overs; need more 121 runs to win from 16 overs

Mandhana dropped by Harmanpreet!

Harmanpreet Kaur puts down Mandhana’s catch at mid-off. Mandhana gave away a catch after shimming down but it goes begging

Khaka goes short again and Smriti has pulled that away for four. Khaka is all over the place with her line and length. After two dots, she concedes a wide. A single to end the over.

TRL -22/0 after 3 Overs

Anuja Patil’s off spin from the other end and bowls a much tighter over with only 5 runs off it.

TRL-16/0 after 2 overs

Short ball first up, Dottin goes for the pull and misses. Three dots later, Dottin gets hold of one and smokes it for a 78 metre long six. Full toss on the pads, Dottin hammers it away for four. A single to end the over. TRL- 11/0 after 1 Over.

We are underway withTrailblazers’ chase!

Smriti Mandhana and Deandra Dottin to open, Ayabonga Khaka has the new ball. Here we go!

Ecclestone to bowl the final over. Siriwardene departs. She is caught short of her crease. Anuja Patil takes a single and gets Harman back on strike. Two dots later, Harman is caught short of her crease – good team effort from Dottin and keeper Richa. Trailblazers have been brilliant in the last couple of overs. A single and a run out off the last ball.

SPN- 146/6 after 20 overs

SPN-141/3 after 19 overs

A economical over after the first-ball wicket for Goswami with just 4 runs off it. Two overs left, time for Harmanpreet to begin her onslaught.

SPN-126/3 after 18 overs

SPN go 3 down

Goswami to Rodrigues and gets a soft dismissal. Rodrigues couldn’t believe she’s chipped a full ball straight to the bowler. Just a gentle delivery, Rodrigues overbalanced trying to nudge to long-on, ended up getting it on the outside half of the bat, easy grab in the follow through.

Harleen returns. Chamari goes down the ground off the second, times it well, but holes out to Hemalatha. Jemimah, the new woman in, joins Harmanpreet at the crease. Five runs off the over.

SPN-122/2 after 17 overs

Big blow to SPN; Athapaththu departs for 67

Big wicket for Trailblazers. Chamari Athapaththu departs. She holes out to Hemalatha at long-off. But what a blinder of a knock from the Sri Lankan – 67 runs off just 48 balls. Harleen Deol gets the crucial wicket.

Strategic Timeout taken

Salma Khatun, so economical in the her first three, is carted for 14 runs in her final over. A massive Six and a splendid drive for Four from Athapaththu, what a knock this is turning out to be from the Sri Lankan!

SPN-117/1 after 16 overs

Sophie returns. So far, all the Supernovas batswomen have carefully played the world’s no 1 T20 bowler, who bowled a fantastic spell in her last game. Just three runs off the over. Better safe than sorry, maybe that’s the approach of Harmanpreet and Co.

SPN-103/1 after 15 overs

100 comes up for Supernovas

Khatun into her third. Kaur works it towards mid-wicket for a single. Atapattu now pulls one for a single. Will be interesting to see Atapattu’s approach from now on. Four singles off the over.

SPN-100/1 after 14 overs

Chamari Athapaththu gets to her half-century! The opener brings up her half-century off 38 balls, with a first boundary in a while. A misfled from Goswami helps but the Sri Lankan has been all clean-hitting and good shots.

SPN-96/1 after 13 overs

Fifty for Athapaththu

Eventful over from Khatun!

Salma Khatun continues. Loud shout for lbw. Not given. Mandhana decides to review but it’s a terrible review, rather desperate. There’s a clear edge. Atapattu is safe. But Khatun eventually manages to find a wicket as Punia holes out. An excellent diving catch that by Deepti. Two runs and a wicket.

SPN-89/1 after 12 overs

Khatun draws first blood!

Superb catch by Deepti on the leg side. She kept her eyes on the ball all the while.Salma ends Priya’s struggles at the crease.

Harleen Deol is given the ball and she goes for 7 runs as the opening partnership goes on strong. Seven runs off the over.

SPN-87/0 after 11 overs

We reach the halfway mark

Salma Khatun comes into the attack. Punia now using her feet unlike the first few overs – driven for a single. Good over that, given how Atapattu has been toying with the attack. Just five off it. SPN 80/0 after 10 overs

Punia Dropped!

Rajeshwari Gayakwad almost had the first wicket as Priya Punia came down the track and hoisted her to long-off but a running Deandra Dottin misjudges the catch and it goes for a boundary. Just that kind of a day 8 runs off the over.

SPN-75/0 after 9 overs

Even Sophie Ecclestone is unable to stop this flow of boundaries as Priya Punia hits her for another four. A much better over though, with only 6 runs off it

Rajeshwari Gayakwad, left arm orthodox, comes into the attack. Chamari throws caution to the winds, collects another six in the over. But there was good rotation of strike too as five singles came in the over.

SPN-61/0 after 7 overs

Fifty partnership for Punia-Athapaththu

Sophie Ecclestone, the world’s No 1 T20 bowler, comes into the attack. Should be a nice contest between her and Chamari. But it is Priya who smacks Sophie for a boundary off the fifth and follows it up with a single, bringing up the fifty for Supernovas. Seven runs off the over.

SPN-50/0 after 6 overs

Expensive from Jhulan Goswami!

Jhulan into her third. Errs in line, strays on the pads and Atapattu works it past fine-leg for four. SIX! Atapattu is off and running – what a strike, pulled away for six. Great timing. Freebie – 5 wides. 15 off that over. SPN 43/0 after 5 Overs.

Athapaththu continues to attack Deepti Sharma and does it with style. The Sri Lankan hits the first Six of the innings – a clean strike over long-off – a couple of wides later follows with a quality sweep down on a knee. 15 runs off the over as the Indian off-spinner continues to leak runs.

SPN- 28/0 after 4 overs

Jhulan continues. Punia drives but finds the fielder. She is yet to get off the mark. Loud appeal for lbw – not given. And they don’t review. Rightly so: it was missing leg-stump. Punia drives again and once again, straight to the fielder. Finally opens her account with a single, does Punia. SPN 13/0 after 3 Overs.

Deepti Sharma sharing the new ball and Athapaththu decides to go after her. Two boundaries – a slog sweep through square and a clean hit down the ground – and Trailblazers gets 10 runs from the over.

SPN-12/0 after 2 overs

We are underway!

A dot to begin the proceedings. The ball keeps a little low on that occassion. 1Leg bye off the next ball – hint of movement for Jhulan. Two dots follow. A single to short mid-wicket for Athapaththu. Another dot to end the over. SPN 2/0 after 1 Over.

Harmanpreet: We will bat first. It’s a must-win game for us and we thought if we bat first it will be advantage for us as we have added one extra spinner to our team. All of us are having a good time in the nets. Change of pace is key as a bowler.
