ISL 2020: FC Goa’s wait for win extended as NEUFC holds them to a 1-1 draw

FC Goa vs NorthEast United FC Full Time Score: FC Goa 1-1 NEUFC; Spoils shared between the two sides after an intriguing 90 minutes. Idrissa Sylla’s opener from the spot was cancelled out in just over 3 minutes in the first half by Igor Angulo Alboniga. FC Goa continued to dominate the ball and attack NEUFC’s defense but the Highlanders were up for the challenge and kept the Gaurs at bay.

Both sides had half chances but neither could find that all-important final ball. The Highlanders’ defense was mightily impressive and they just were unable to go past in the second 45.In the end both sides had to be happy with a point each. Another disappointment for the Gaurs who are yet to win this season. NEUFC will take the point as that means they are yet to lose this season.

Juan Ferrando: “Today, the one point is important. It was difficult to find space in this game. One team was defending and one team was attacking. [Pressure after the mixed results?] No. Team is working for me and it’s a new players and new coach. [Lack of penetration in midfield] We need to break the lines. We need high performance to attack these areas. But the legs aren’t ready at times. [On tusle with Nus] I prefer to not talk about it and talk about it face to face. The penalty, I don’t think it was a penalty.”

Gerard Nus: “I am happy with the players. Big effort after third game in 10 days. This is our style, how we play. Everybody know’s Goa’s quality coming here to play. We had to work hard and we did. [5 changes] We run a lot and work so much. We need to bring in fresh people and people we trust 100. I trust evrrybody with the effort they play in training. I am thinking about the Saturday’s game. Gallego will be ready for the next game. He felt something during activation due to the volume and intensity of the game, so we were conservative. [Tussle with Ferrando] Basically, he was interested in EUFC. He was at our bench. Ask him.”

90′- 5 extra minutes have been added on after regulation time

89′- FC Goa substitution

FCG bring in Ishan Pandita, a forward who replaces Aibanbha Kupar Dohling, a defender. Clearly, the home side is looking for the winner here.

Khassa Camara is the first player in the referee’s book, as he unceremoniously brings Princeton down.

85′- That’s a cheap corner conceded by Gurmeet. Another poor cross from Ortiz should have been comfortable for him to deal with, but he doesn’t hold on to the ball, and it goes behind.

84′- Off the woodwork!

Alberto Noguera Ripoll gets the ball outside the box on the right. He cuts inside and seeing the space on offer, he looks to find the low corner at the near post. He connects well with the shot. 74′- That is a foul from Angulo as he leans into Fox when the Aussie was jumping to win a header. Goa are getting a bit desperate here.
73′- Substitution

70′- Ivan Garrido Gonzalez and Rochharzela get into a scuffle but the referee is quick to intervene and both the players can consider themselves lucky not to go into the referee’s book.
67′- Another change from NEUFC as Rochharzela comes on for Lalrempuia Fanai who was dealing with a cramp. Can the youngster find his side find the winner?
65′- Another chance from a set-piece for FCG. Seriton Benny Fernandes gets the ball in the middle of the park and he dashes to the right and looks to whip in the cross but his attempt is blocked by Gurjinder Kumar. Another corner from the home side is easily dealt with by NEUFC.

63′- Set Piece wasted

The away side have been awarded a spot kick and what an opportunity it is for the Highlanders to take the lead in this game.
34′- What a golden opportunity it was for NEUFC. An excellent cross comes from Gurjiner. It picks out Idrissa Sylla in the box perfectly. Idrissa heads it but the ball goes wide of the net. He can’t believe it. But what a chance it was!
33′- Idrissa Sylla draws a foul as he contests for a header. Chance for NEUFC to work their set-piece magic. It is Luis Machado who takes the free kick but hits it straight out of play.
32′- Machado has hit that free-kick straight out of play, which is a waste for NorthEast United.

21′- Close to 70 percent possession for Goa; NEUFC looking to play on the counter so far

20′- NorthEast end a spell of possession with a nice pass to Machado down the left. He teases Seriton before whipping a cross in, but that is overhit, and left to go behind for a goal-kick, which Nawaz will take.

17′-NEUFC players are offering some threat in attack after Goa’s brisk start. Direct running through the flanks and the middle of the park and some dangerous crosses so far which has required good defending.

15′- Some delightful dribbling from Brandon Fernandes in the midfield but the Gaur midfielder misplaces his pass. He will be disappointed with that.

13′- A free kick for FC Goa in a good area to send a dangerous ball inside the box.

12′- Machado, on the break, drives through the middle and plays in the ball behind Aiban to Sylla but the striker couldn’t sort his feet out. Aiban recovers to dispossess him.

5′- Brandon with a diagonal switch from left to right for Ortiz, who cuts into the centre and fires a shot straight at Subhasish. Encouraging start from Goa.

2′- NorthEast have an early corner. The corner comes to nothing, as Ivan Gonzalez stands tall and heads it away really well, and gets good distance on the clearance.

1′- We’re underway at Fatorda, as Sylla gets the ball rolling for NorthEast United.

Both sides make their way out to the field and are standing either side of the referee for the Indian National Anthem.

The stage is all set and we are just minutes away from the action!
