ISL 2020-21: Can a revamped FC Goa side end six match losing streak against Bengaluru FC?

FC Goa plays their ISL 2020 opener against heavyweights Bengaluru FC, however, the odds are completely stacked against the Gaurs. Billed as a high octane clash, FC Goa will take on Bengaluru FC in Matchday 3 of Indian Super League (ISL 2020-21). Interestingly, FC Goa have not defeated Bengaluru FC in six of their last seven clashes and the Gaurs will be hoping to break the losing streak under new head coach Juan Ferrando.

However, it will be interesting to see how a revamped FC Goa side will seek to overturn their lopsided fortunes.

FC Goa’s last league stage game in the Indian Super League (ISL) saw them rock up at Jamshedpur knowing that a win would guarantee them a first place finish, and with it become the first Indian side to qualify for the group stages of the AFC Champions League proper

It came just two games after the sacking of former coach Sergio Lobera. Hugo Boumous and Ferran Corominas combined for the latter to score the first. Boumous added a second. Then the drain started.

Of the players mentioned above, those integral to the team’s style, their performances, their results, only one remains this season. Edu Bedia.

Boumous, Jahouh, Fall, and Dessai followed their old manager, Lobera, to form a super-team at City Football Group-funded Mumbai City FC. Coro, that record ISL scorer extraordinaire, wasn’t retained. Neither was Pena, so crucial to the team’s defensive organisation.

On the other hand, Bengaluru FC have not only retained their core from last season but also further strengthened their squad. The statistics favour the Bengaluru based franchise but Ferrando doesn’t want to dwell on the past.

“I know the history of Bengaluru FC against FC Goa. I know what happened in the last games. But this is a new team, a new chapter, a new moment of the season,” Ferrando said in an official statement.

Carles Cuadrat who is yet to taste defeat against FC Goa as head coach will be aiming to keep his record intact, with his side unbeaten in their last six games against the hosts.

“I don’t know Juan Ferrando personally but I know all the Spanish coaches have a good formation and are very studious about opponents, tactics, and strategy,” the 52-year-old said.
