ISL 2020-21 BFC VS ATKMB: We don’t have No.10, Chhetri’s workload has increased rues Bengaluru FC coach Moosa; With seven draws, five losses and just four wins, Bengaluru FC are not the side that has been a title contender in the last three Indian Super League seasons. The side is struggling this time around and the problem remains in converting chances. But the Sunil Chhetri-led side is resilient. They are on a comeback trail under interim head coach Naushad Moosa with two draws and a win in the last three games.
However, their fragile nature this season will once again be tested against the mighty ATK Mohun Bagan when they face the defending champions for the second time this season at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Tuesday.
ISL 2020-21: Bengaluru FC vs ATK Mohun Bagan Preview
BFC’s attacking woes continue
BFC’s primary problem in the last two seasons has been scoring. Chhetri, BFC’s top scorer in the ISL, has had to adjust to different strike-partners ranging from Ashique Kuruniyan to Miku and Nili Perdomo and now Cleiton Silva. However, Chhetri hasn’t found the connection he had with Miku. As a result, the attacking options have stayed rather limited.
The other problem is BFC’s midfield. While Erik Paartalu, Suresh Wangjam and Dimas Delgado have had done wonders in their positions, they have lacked the attacking edge — something that Brazilian Raphael Augusto or Lenny Rodrigues brought to the table. The midfielders haven’t been able to establish a connection with strikers that have resulted in the lack of goals.
Furthermore, Silva is doubtful against ATKMB and that will force Moosha to go for Kristian Opseth, who is more of a number-9 who needs support from an attacking midfielder to slot it in. But BFC don’t have a player in that position. Chhetri could be considered a No.10 and that is a risk Moosha will have to take. Chhetri at 35 isn’t as agile as he used to be.
However, with just four matches left, BFC do not have the luxury to tinker the playing XI too much. Instead, they will have to focus on second-placed ATKMB who have been in red hot form in front of goal. ATKMB have netted 30 in their 15 games with Fijian international Roy Krishna leading the scoring chart with 11 goals. In addition, ATKMB are coming back off a 4-1 thrashing of Odisha FC and another win would bolster their top-4 position and could propel them to the top spot.
