Speaking to the media ahead of the first T20I, Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie opened up on how it is a dream of most of his players to play in the IPL.

“We have a number of players who are good at the T20 format. We are all aware of how competitive it is to get into the IPL. That’s a huge ambition for a lot of us. That’s the pinnacle of T20 cricket. You see how quickly certain players develop when they get access to the league. We have a number of players who play in different leagues but not the IPL. When they come back to the Irish team, they bring a lot of experience and learning,” said Balbirnie.
Hence, it is quite clear that the Irish cricketers will try to use this opportunity as perhaps the stepping stone towards an IPL contract. One of Ireland’s biggest weapons is a player who should have had an IPL contract by now – Paul Stirling.
The opening batter has played over 100 T20I matches for his nation and has scored nearly 3000 runs. Besides that, Craig Young was in sublime form in Ireland’s last T20I expedition in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier A. The pacer is just 2 wickets away from reaching the tally of 50 T20I wickets.
Debutants on the cards?
Ireland have called up two newbies to their squad – wicketkeeper-batter Stephen Doheny and bowler Conor Olphert. Among them, the former is likely to get a chance in the playing XI, given that Balbirnie’s team is slightly short on the batting front. Doheny is a 23-year-old youngster who can mould his game according to the demand of the situation.

What will be Ireland’s bowling combination?
Given’s India’s strong batting lineup, it is absolutely a must for Ireland to nail their bowling combination. Balbirnie is expected to play three pacers and a couple of spinners.
