IPL Matches in Neutral Venues : BCCI official proposes ’neutral venues for IPL games, claims IPL GC to discuss proposal

IPL Matches in Neutral Venus : The Indian Premier Leagues 15 edition will be expanded to 10 teams. But this is not only the change which IPL 15 will witness. According to a report quoting one of the BCCI official it is likely that IPL Governing Council may make it a rule that franchises will have to play few of their games on the neutral venues.

In an interview to Hindustan Times, Jaydev Shah, president of Saurashtra cricket association (SCA) has claimed that the proposal of mandatory use of neutral venues was discussed in the just concluded Annual General Meeting of BCCI.
Shah who himself was a first class cricketer of repute told Hindustan Times that, “Once IPL becomes a 10-team league, franchises must be asked to play two of their home matches at a neutral venue. It’s the only way smaller centres who have spent crores on infrastructure get opportunity and experience. We were told the matter will be taken up by the IPL Governing Council,” Shah said.

It is worth noting that every state association that hosts IPL as per the BCCI ruling gets 1 Cr as hosting fee per match. Other than this hosting association also gets other privileges by hosting IPL matches in their respective stadiums.

“We would be very happy if more state bodies get to host the IPL,” said a Baroda Cricket Association official to Hindustan Times.

Use of Neutral Venues not a new formula – but has never been mandatory for the franchises in past –

– Delhi Capitals has used Raipur as neutral venue in the past

– Rajasthan Royals was suppose to use Guwahati in IPL 2020 as neutral venue for few matches before IPL 13 was shifted to UAE

– Kings XI Punjab has used INDORE as neutral venue in 2018.
But will the franchises with strong fan-base in their respective cities accept such a proposal ? It will be tough to make franchises like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings or Kolkata Knight Riders agree to NEUTRAL VENUES norm.
