Former India batsman, Aakash Chopra suggested that Mumbai Indians should allow Bumrah to sit out a few games if the BCCI requests it because the bowler has to be fully healthy for the major international competitions later this year.

“You’re an Indian player first and then you play for your franchise. So, if Bumrah feels any discomfort, the BCCI will step in and tell the franchise that we are not going to release him. The world won’t end if he doesn’t play seven games with Jofra Archer,” said Chopra.

“At the same time, when you’re fit, you want to keep on playing as that only makes you better. So I definitely feel MI will pay heed to it if BCCI steps in because he is a national treasure and things aren’t as difficult to manage as they seem to be at the moment,” he added.

Aakash Chopra’s opinion on whether Jasprit Bumrah should play red-ball cricket before WTC final

Ravindra Jadeja’s comeback to international cricket has been sensational. Many believe that the one first-class match that Ravindra Jadeja played for Saurashtra helped him find his rhythm. When asked if Jasprit Bumrah could play in the Irani Trophy or County Cricket once he had fully recovered from injury, Aakash Chopra responded:

“If he is fit, he will go and play those games (Irani Trophy and County cricket). But the IPL is still a month away and we don’t even know if he will play all games. The WTC final is three months away. So it’s too early to say anything.”

The star speedster has been out of action for a while now due to recurring back injuries. He also missed the 2022 T20 World Cup and the ongoing Border-Gavasakar Trophy against Australia. Recently, BCCI announced the India squad for the ODIs against Australia, excluding Bumrah. BCCI stated that the pacer’s recovery from stress fracture has been a slow one and the Indian team management is unlikely to risk playing him in the three ODIs.

It’s clear that Bumrah isn’t back to full fitness and BCCI doesn’t want to rush his comeback after a failed attempt last year in September when he played a couple of T20Is against Australia. Bumrah will be needed for the potential World Test Championship final at the Oval in London from June 7-11 and also for the big ODI World Cup in India at the end of the year.
