IPL 2023: Why Punjab Kings could release Mayank Agarwal and Odean Smith?

  • Mayank Agarwal was one of the two players retained before the mega auction, costing a whopping Rs 14 crore
  • He was captain last season, but the team and his own form dovetailed in a forgettable campaign.
  • The new coaching staff have already appointed Dhawan as captain.
  • Jonny Bairstow is another opening option the franchise have and are keen to try him out with Dhawan.
  • Mayank has struggled for runs in recent times and was dropped from the Indian test team as well.
  • Odean Smith was also bought for Rs 6 crore but failed to live up to his reputation.
  • In the six games Smith played, he could only manage 51 runs at a strike rate of 115.91.
  • With the ball, he leaked runs at an alarming rate of 11.87.

Shardul Thakur, KS Bharat not part of DC plans anymore?

Having bagged a whopping INR 10.75 crore, Thakur was one of the most expensive players in the 2022 mega action. As he couldn’t perform to expectations, the Capitals might release him to broaden their purse at the event.

  • DC might release Thakur in the auction and then bid for him at a lower price.
  • He scored 120 runs in 14 games in the IPL 2022.
  • Although he took 15 wickets, his economy rate was close to 10.
  • Thakur has might still hold value for his all-rounder skills, but his stocks are expected to go down in the upcoming auction.
  • KS Bharat was purchased at a cost of INR 2 crore by DC.
  • The wicketkeeper-batter managed just eight runs in his two outings in IPL 2022.
  • Bharat is expected to released from the DC squad ahead of the auction.

Mavi OUT, Ferguson IN?

KKR are expected to trade Shivam Mavi and bring back the ace-pacer Lockie Ferguson in the squad. Mavi had a decent outing during the IPL 2021, due to which KKR showed faith in him and purchased him at the price of INR 7.25 CR for the last concluded edition. With his ability to bowl at more than 140 km/hr consistently, the franchise was expecting him to chip in by providing breakthroughs during the 2022 edition, but his performance dipped and it showed that the bowler failed to justify his price.

In six matches during the 2022 edition, Mavi bagged only five wickets, while his bowling economy was 10.32, which was one of the worst in the last edition.

Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd are West Indies players that might be released from their respective squads

Jason Holder may possibly be among the players released by Lucknow Super Giants prior to the IPL 2023 Auctions. Due to his form, it was hardly shocking when the West Indian was bought for INR 8.75 Cr at the auctions last year. However, he struggled in the IPL 2022, and ever after, he hasn’t performed well for West Indies either.

LSG might not be overly concerned if they are unable to repurchase Holder at the auctions because Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan are already part of the squad. Similarly, SRH all-rounder Romario Shepherd might not be a part of the Orange Army in the upcoming season.

Finch, Williamson, Mills among other foreign players to be released?

The Orange Army might release their skipper Kane Williamson and hand over the leadership charge to the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram or Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Williamson seemed to lose all sense of timing with his bat after taking control of the team. The veteran scored only 216 runs in the league’s 13 games, averaging 19.64 and striking out at a low 93.

Australia’s senior batter Aaron Finch might be shown the exit door by KKR with Alex Hales returning to the KKR camp. Similarly, pacer Mills is expected to be released by the five-time champions Mumbai Indians with their ace-pacer Jofra Archer returning to the fold.
