IPL 2022: Venky Mysore opens about Kolkata Knight Riders: In a chat with former Australia spinner Brad Hogg, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders Venky Mysore revealed how he revamped the team and built a new-look side from scratch after poor performance in the first three seasons. He had told the KKR owners Shahrukh Khan, Jai Mehta, and Juhi Chawla to not retain any players during the auction, as KKR went with a full purse during the auction and bagged Gambhir for a whopping amount of 11 crores.

“KKR had an awesome team McCullum, Ponting, Akhtar, and Gul. The team was unbelievable, so I said we have to do something different. We had an opportunity at that time and one of the key decisions that I would look back on my 11-year-old career where I put my neck on my line and said, we are not retaining any players. We are allowed to retain up to five years. We went to the auction with a full purse. The bottom line was we let go of all the star players which became a controversy,” Mysore told Brad Hogg.

Besides Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, KKR is the only team to have won the IPL title more than once – lifting the trophy in 2012 and 2014. Gautam Gambhir was the captain, which shows why Mysore’s decision of breaking the bank of him was the sigh decision.

IPL 2022: KKR’s Plan for IPL 2022 Auction

The Knight Riders have retained four players for IPL 2022

  • Andre Russell
  • Sunil Narine
  • Varun Chakravarthy
  • Venkatesh Iyer

For these four players, Mysore & Co. have shelled out a total of INR 42 crore from their purse and will have INR 48 crore to work with in the upcoming IPL auction, which will be held at Bengaluru on 12th and 13th February.
