Virat Kohli- Slab 1 (Rs 16 Crore):
Outgoing captain Virat Kohli has already confirmed that he will play for RCB in IPL 2022. Hence, it can be considered that he will be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli has been on a whopping Rs 17 crore salary package for the last 4 seasons at the franchise. With retained players free to negotiate their salaries with their franchises, Virat Kohli is expected to become most expensive cricketer in IPL 2022.

Yuzvendra Chahal- Slab 3 (Rs 8 Crore):
An important cog in RCB’s setup, Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the finest spinners in the T20s. With 139 wickets in 113 matches at an average of 22.04. Since making debut back in 2014, he has remained a loyal RCB player. With another good season with RCB in IPL 2021, he is expected to be RCB’s third retaintion.
Devdutt Padikkal Slab 4 (Rs 4 Crore)
RCB opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal has been impressive for RCB for the last couple of seasons. He has given stability at the top of the order. He scored 411 and 473 in IPL 2020 and IPL 2021 respectively. The franchise is likely to reward him with retention and the youngster will be more than happy with a double IPL salary of Rs 4 crore.

Who will be RCB’s 4th retention?
AB de Villiers’ surprising retirement announcement has surprised the team management and fans. After Virat Kohli, he was the fan favourite to don the full-time captaincy cap. But now, RCB are unlikely to go for a 4th retention and may look at the auction to fill the void. Glenn Maxwell with his all-round abilities has made a turnaround for RCB in IPL 2021 but given he is already 33, RCB may look for other options.
They will have to look for a player who can lead the team. Within the squad, Daniel Christian, Daniel Sams, Kyle Jamieson are the other foreigners besides Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushamntha Chameera. But considering the Kiwi’s price tag, RCB could be reluctant to retain him, the lanky fast bowler. Hasaranga could be an excellent candidate but his debut season in the IPL didn’t exactly go according to plans.
IPL 2022 Retention Policy:
- A maximum of 4 players could be retained.
- A maximum of three Indian players can be retained.
- A franchise can opt for a maximum of two foreigners.
- There are four slabs in retention.
- The highest category is of Rs 16 crore, followed by Rs 12 Cr, Rs 8 Cr and the lowest slab is of Rs 6 Cr.
