IPL 2022: The hosting of IPL 2022 matches in Maharashtra proved to be a costly affair as BCCI paid a total of Rs 48 Crore for 74 matches. BCCI had to shell out Rs 64.8 lakh per match as hosting fees alone. Of that, Mumbai Cricket Association received the bulk of it as it hosted 57 IPL matches last year, pocketing a total of Rs 37 Crore. With the COVID-19 pandemic still in effect, the BCCI decided to host the entire IPL 2022 in Maharashtra. The playoffs including the final was played in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
The initial plan was to conduct the entire IPL in home and away system. But ultimately it was decided that the matches will be conducted only in Maharashtra to avoid air travel and exposure to the virus. It helped Mumbai Cricket Association immensely. The MCA pocketed the bulk of the amount as the matches were conducted at the Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium.
However, for IPL 2023, the BCCI is going to revert to the home and away system. The BCCI has already set plans in motion to change the format with a longer two and half months window for IPL 2023.
The 10 teams will now play each other twice in home and away system. The playoffs will remain the same. Last time, the 10 teams were divided into two pools. One team faced each other twice from the same pool and once against a team from the other pool. That way, BCCI tried to keep matches to a total of 74 in 64 days. For 2023, a total of 94 matches will be played over 74 days.
