IPL 2022: Jonny Bairstow’s NIGHTMARE continues, opening GAMBLE fails as England opener manages just 1

Jonny Bairstow’s lack of runs has been a huge cause of concern for Punjab Kings this season and captain Mayank Agarwal attempted to change the fortunes by promoting the Englishman to the top of the order. Bairstow has a stellar record opening in the IPL with a strike rate above 140 and an average close to 42, with Agarwal himself dropping down to the middle order.

However, the gamble did not pay off as Bairstow was dismissed for just 1, top-edging a Mohammed Shami delivery to continue his barren run. The hard-hitting England batsman has looked a shell of his best self, and both him and Punjab will need to get the best out of him should Agarwal and Co make a late push for the playoffs.

Jonny Bairstow missed the first three games of the IPL due to international duty, but was slotted straight back into the team after he finished his quarantine. The former Sunrisers star has managed to score past 25 in only 1 of his seven games this season, with his strike rate remaining a lowly 105 while he averages just 11.43.

With Jitesh Sharma keeping wickets and the likes of Odean Smith, Benny Howell and Shah Rukh Khan warming the bench, Bairstow will have to up his game in the upcoming matches in what is a must-win stretch for the Punjab Kings.
