IPL 2022: 5 IPL Captains who are unlikely to be retained by their IPL franchises

David Warner: David Warner has already bid adieu to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Australian opener & ‘Man of the Tournament’ from the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2021 was sacked from captaincy and dropped out of playing XI mid-season in the 14th edition of the IPL after a poor run of form in the starting few games.

Warner, who is synonymous with The Orange Army, took over the Hyderabad franchise’s leadership role in 2015 and led them to the title victory in the 2016 edition. He took Sunrisers Hyderabad again in the playoffs in the 2017 edition and has been a consistent run-scorer in the league, scoring 600+ runs in six seasons.

KL Rahul: Just like David Warner, KL Rahul too has been the lone warrior for his IPL franchises – Kings XI Punjab. KL Rahul was one of the biggest revelations of IPL 2018 as the Indian opener won the Orange Cap in his debut season as the Punjab captain.

Averaging 50+ in each of the last 4 editions, Rahul has been terrific with the bat but failed to take his side into the playoffs. And, that is what is expected to be the main reason for his omission from the side.

Shreyas Iyer: Delhi Capitals’ prolific middle-order batter and former skipper, Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to retain his spot in the franchise. Under Iyer’s captaincy, the Delhi franchise made it to the playoffs twice including their maiden appearance in the final in the 2020 edition in UAE.

However, Iyer went off the radar completely in the 2021 edition due to a shoulder injury just ahead of the start of the tournament. And in his absence, Rishabh Pant led the side well and also continued the leadership role in Iyer’s presence in the second leg of the tournament.

Eoin Morgan: England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan is unlikely to be retained by Kolkata Knight Riders. Though KKR made it to the finals of the 2021 edition, Morgan’s individual performance had nothing to do with the feat.

Morgan returned to KKR in 2020 and was one of the top buys for KKR in the 2020 IPL Auction. He also took over captaincy duties from Dinesh Karthik mid-season in 2020 but failed to leave an impression in the recently concluded edition.

In 17 innings, Morgan scored just 47 runs at an average of 11.08 and with KKR looking forward to Shubhman Gill and other young players, Morgan is most likely to be dropped from the setup.

Sanju Samson: One of the promising young talents Sanju Samson has been a consistent run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals in the past couple of seasons. But he too has failed to bring a change in fortune for the Halla Bol franchise. Rajasthan finished at the bottom in the 2020 edition and 7th in the 2021 edition under Samson’s leadership.
