PBKS vs RCB in IPL 2021: After KL Rahul set the stage with a brilliant 91-run knock, Punjab Kings had a surprise for Royal Challengers. An unknown Harpreet Brar rattled RCB’s famed batting lineup, cleaning up Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. It was Brar’s 3/19 that changed the game in PBKS’ favour and RCB could never recover from that. After the match-winning performance, Brar said he was never under pressure even when Kohli hit him for a six.
PBKS vs RCB in IPL 2021: ‘I planned to bowl in right areas,’ says Harpreet Brar
When a rather unknown spinner Harpreet Brar came to bowl in the 7th over, Virat Kohli showed little respect, smashing him for a six over the long-on. Then smashed him for a 4 in his second over. In the first two overs, Brar conceded 19 runs without any success.
But the next two overs belonged to the young man from Punjab’s Moga. Off the first delivery of the 11th over, Kohli stepped out to smash Brar and was clean bowled. The next batsman was Maxwell and he too could not read the left-arm spinner’s ball and was bowled. Brar returned with two wickets without conceding a run in his 3rd over.
In the 4th over, he came to bowl with AB de Villiers on the crease. As de Villiers wanted to smack his wider delivery, he gave a catch to KL Rahul. In this over, he only conceded 2 runs to take his tally to 3/19 in his four overs.
“I planned to bowl in the right areas. Even if I got hit, I planned not to change that. If the batsmen were stepping out, my plan was to bowl at the roughs. That’s it. Against AB de Villiers, my plan was to keep the ball a bit wider and let him play his shots. That’s why we kept slips for him. But I got his wicket when I wanted to bowl a dot ball. I’m blessed,” Punjab Kings’ Harpreet Brar said at the post-match press conference on Friday.
PBKS vs RCB in IPL 2021: ‘I wanted to play freely and that helped,’ Brar says
After he was smashed by Kohli in the first two overs, the pressure would be on the bowler. But Brar said he wanted to play freely and did not want to think about anything else or change his plans.
“Yes, there is always pressure but I have already played under pressure. When you don’t do well, it puts you under pressure. But this time, in the back of my mind, I wanted to play freely. I wanted to just play the way I could and see what happens after that. That was on my mind while playing. I didn’t want to put myself under stress and wanted to take it easy,” Harpreet Brar said.
As Harpreet Brar is off to a great start in IPL 2021, he said he wants to continue his performance especially when he got the chance to represent a franchise that belongs to Punjab, his home state.
“I hail from Moga district. I am sure the people back home would be proud and happy. I wasn’t overwhelmed when Kohli hit me because a bowler always gets a second chance to come back. My first IPL wicket was Kohli Paaji’s wicket and that was very special. It came out in a flow after that, your body opens up, you get confident and things fall in place. When I came out to bat, I had the time to wait for a couple of overs. Rahul bhai was also talking to me about the conditions and about the shots I could play,” the Punjab Kings bowler said.
It feels really great when you play and perform for the same franchise where you grow up. When I wasn’t getting my chances, I told myself that whenever you get one, do well and help the team win,” Harpreet Brar added.
