IPL 2021: Trevor Bayliss says, ‘Kane Williamson needed a bit of extra time to get to his match fitness’- Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Trevor Bayliss said why the David Warner-led SRH did not play Kane Williamson in their opening match of IPL 2021.
“Yeah, we felt that Kane Williamson needed a bit of extra time to get his match fitness, a little bit more time in the nets. He would have played in place of Jonny Bairstow. Obviously, Jonny Bairstow is in form recently in white-ball cricket in India. It was nice to see him get a 50 or so,” said Bayliss.
“Depending on fitness and form, Jonny Bairstow can open the batting. He has done well for England at no.4 recently,” Bayliss noted.
“Kane rules certainly come into the calculation as the tournament unfolds,” he added.
Bayliss also explained why Abdul Samad was not sent ahead of Vijay Shankar in the match against KKR.
“Vijay was in practice session was one of the best players. He struck the balls beautifully and in one of the matches, he scored 95 runs and hit the balls a long way over the fence. It was difficult to execute it in the first match. He’s got talent and he’ll get more experience and opportunities.”
The SRH coach also felt that Abdul Samad and Manish Pandey did their best by scoring 38 runs in the last 2 overs but SRH had lost the match by the end of the 18th over.
Earlier, skipper David Warner said, “I didn’t think there were that many runs on this wicket. They adapted really well, had a good partnership. We misexecuted the first ball of most overs and then conceded a lot at the end. We lost early wickets, and Jonny and Manish got us in a good position, so we had our chances,” at the post-match presentation.
“The dew made a difference. If the bowlers overpitched, it was easy to hit it, and with the height in their team, and with the cross-seam, it stopped a little bit on us. We would like to have won the first game, but we have four more games at this venue and hopefully, we will get used to the square and the dimensions of this ground,” he added.
