IPL 2021: Top 5 Biggest Fights in the History of IPL: We all are aware of the fact that how intense is the game of cricket and how intensely these players play when performing on the biggest of the stages. IPL is considered to be one of the biggest platforms for any player- whether domestic or international and renders a set platform for these players to get some prominence. In the pursuit of being the best things tend to heat up between the players which eventually brews up into a scuffle. From verbal spat to wild actions, IPL has seen every kind of fierce fight on the field.
With the Fair Play Award mechanism being introduced in the IPL, such incidents have wanned down over the years but the competitiveness of the players has kept things on fire. Check out the Top 5 Biggest Fights in the History of IPL:
1. S Sreesanth vs Harbhajan Singh (IPL 2008):
The incident took place in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008 when two of India’s most aggressive players were involved in an altercation. It happened when KXIP triumphed over MI and Sreesanth who was then a part of the Kings XI Punjab franchise was observed poking Harbhajan Singh who was a member of the Mumbai Indians continent.
The latter in all frustration and embarrassment of the defeat lost his control and lashed out on Sreesanth with a slap on his face. This might probably be one and the last incident when any physical encounter happened on the field of cricket in IPL.
Although the footage of Harbhajan slapping Sreesanth was completely kept obscured but Sreesanth was seen on the big screen with an outpour of tears.
2. Gautam Gambhir vs Virat Kohli (IPL 2013):
It rather came as a surprise when the 2 Indian superstars hailing from the same city- Delhi, were caught in an ugly fight in the 2013 edition.
It was during RCB’s chase when KKR saw Virat Kohli’s back to the pavilion. KKR was jubilated after removing the RCB skipper and Viraat could not swallow that down his throat. While walking back to the dressing room, Virat had few words to spew at the bowler which was totally unacceptable to the KKR skipper- Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir then reached out to Kohli to return the favors and what should have been a regular dismissal turned out to be one of the biggest tussles between the players.
It was then another Delhi player, Rajat Bhatia who separated the two boiling players and calmed down the things.
Post the match they played down the incident and admitted to a Level One offense (Article 2.1.4) for using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive, or insulting during the match.
3. Mitchell Starc vs Kieron Pollard (IPL 2014):
Talking about battles and not to mention Kieron Pollard, will be unfair to both him and the game of cricket.
You would not want to be on the receiving end when the Big Dog, Pollard is in the middle but that didn’t bother the fierce pacer- Mitchell Starc who went head to head against Pollard in an ugly fight.
Pollard is known for playing mind games while batting and will do anything and everything to upset the bowler. It all happened when Starc was steaming in and Pollard at the very last moment decided not to play the delivery and stepped aside. It is never a pleasing sight to a fast bowler when a batsman walks over at the very last moment of the bowler’s delivery stride who is running in from some distance. In all frustration and anger, Starc went on with his delivery and angled it in just past Pollard to the keeper. In an impulsive reaction, Pollard threw his bat in Starc’s direction but luckily it felt only in front of him.
A few balls later Pollard was then run-out by Starc and Pollard didn’t even bother to run toward him to save his wicket.
4. Munaf Patel vs Amit Mishra (IPL 2011):
The two senior pros of Indian cricket were involved in a rather funny spat in the 2011 edition of IPL. Amit Mishra, who is rather known for his bowling skills, smashed Munaf Patel for a couple of boundaries in the last over of the 1st innings. The pacer couldn’t take it after being hit for a few boundaries by a tailender batsman.
Munaf Patel then exchanged a few words with Amit Mishra and that was not it. Later on both the cricketers collided against each other which turned the event even more nasty and ultimately umpires had to intervene to separate the two players.
5. Harbhajan Singh vs Ambati Rayudu (IPL 2016):
Harbhajan Singh, the “Turbunator” was again seen being involved in an infamous fight but this time only with his own team compatriot- Ambati Rayudu.
While playing for the Mumbai Indians both the players indulged in an unpleasantry exchange of words when Saurabh Tiwary playing for Rising Pune Supergiants pulled one to Rayudu in the deep off Harbhajan. Rayudu despite the gritty effort to save the boundary couldn’t latch onto the ball. Seeing that, Harbhajan was furious and yelled at Rayudu. This, in turn, invoked Rayudu who then started charging towards Bhajji and things looked heated.
But it was the senior pro who calmed down and tried to appease the young blood of Rayudu but the latter shrugged off him off and walked back.
