IPL 2021: Suresh Raina takes a jibe at Virat Kohli’s captaincy, says ‘hasn’t won IPL yet’: Former Indian cricketer and current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Suresh Raina opened up on Virat Kohli’s captaincy and believes that Kohli needs to be given a bit more time. Blots have been earmarked around Kohli’s captaincy ever since team India lost the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand. While some feel that Kohli should step down from skipper and allow split captaincy for team India with Rohit Sharma taking the mantle of limited-overs, there are others who vouch for the continuation of his leadership across all cricketing formats.
“You’re talking about an ICC trophy but he hasn’t even won an IPL yet. I feel that he needs to be given some time. There are 2-3 World Cups taking place one after the other – two T20 World Cups and then the 50-over World Cup. It’s not easy to reach the final – sometimes you miss out on a few things. I think he has been the No 1 captain and batsman in the world. His record proves that he has achieved a lot,” Raina told News24 Sports.
For Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli, not winning the IPL has been a thorn in his crown. However, despite repeatedly questioning his captaincy, RCB team management has continued with Virar Kohli. But with another failure in the ICC event, fingers have been raised on his captaincy.
IPL 2021: Raina directs WTC Final loss to under-fire batting
Talking of the just happened prestigious ICC World Test Championship final, Suresh Raina said that the WTC Final loss was largely because of team India’s batting debacle rather than the conditions. India could muster just 217 and 170 runs in the two innings against the Kiwis.
“The WTC final was one such example. People said it was because of the conditions but I feel there was something lacking in batting. The bigger batsmen will have to stitch partnerships and take responsibilities,” he added.
The left-handed former Indian player is hopeful of team India lifting a world cup in another year and a half.
“See, we are not chokers, because we already have the 1983 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup the then 50-over World Cup in 2011. We need to understand that players are training hard. With three World Cups approaching, I don’t think anyone will call them chokers. We need to give them a little more time. They are doing well and Virat Kohli has the capability to change the game. We need to respect the new style of this team. But I feel that in the next 12 to 16 months, an ICC trophy is going to come to India,” Raina explained.
