IPL 2021: The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is in full swing amid a massive surge in the number of COVID-19 cases with Maharashtra at the centre of it. Despite the novel Coronavirus pandemic, BCCI has decided not to make changes to the schedule and venue, keeping matches with players and support staffs in bio-secure bubbles. But that hasn’t prevented COVID-19 cases. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Nitish Rana became the first person to test positive while Delhi Capitals’ Anrich Nortje, who recently arrived from South Africa, has also tested positive for the virus, taking the total toll to 5 players. Apart from them, Axar Patel, Devdutt Padikkal and Daniel Sams besides multiple groundsmen of Wankhede Stadium and other staffs have contracted the virus that has already killed nearly 3 million people globally.

IPL 2021: 5 players who have tested COVID-19 positive so far in IPL

Nitish Rana (KKR): The Kolkata Knight Riders opener became the first victim of the virus. Days before the tournament began, he tested positive for the virus. However, before KKR’s first match, he tested negative thrice and made a full recovery. The diagnosis did not seem to affect him a bit as the Delhi batsman has been in scintillating form, notching up two consecutive half-centuries in the first two matches to take the Orange Cap.

Axar Patel (DC): The man in-form Axar Patel became the second victim. Despite joining the Delhi Capitals camp from Team India bio-bubble, Axar Patel tested positive for COVID-19 and missed the opening match of the IPL 2021.

Devdutt Padikkal (RCB): The Royal Challengers Bangalore youngster tested positive before he joined the RCB bio-bubble. He was isolated at home. Devdutt Padikkal has since tested negative and is expected to feature for RCB in their 2nd game.

Daniel Sams (RCB): Another RCB player to test positive is Daniel Sams. The Australian was in the team’s bio-bubble when he tested positive, making him the 4th player in the IPL to contract the virus. He is still in isolation and as per BCCI’s SOP, he will need to produce three negative tests and a cardiac test to rejoin RCB camp.

Anrich Nortje (DC): The second Delhi Capitals player and the latest victim of the virus is Anrich Nortje. The South African pacer has been in a terrific form before coming to India. His pace has rattled Pakistan’s experienced line-up. But DC will have to wait for his service as he will be unavailable after contracting the virus.
