IPL 2021: Fleming says, ‘We are not finished product but playing well at the moment’

IPL 2021: Fleming says, ‘We are not finished product but playing well at the moment’- CSK coach Stephen Fleming on Wednesday shed light on the team’s turnaround after a dismal run in UAE last year. In IPL 2021 so far, CSK are on roll and they have completed 5 matches winning streak after losing the opening match against Delhi Capitals.

“We learned a little bit of stuff in the UAE. We had a pretty bad run. A lot of things went against us. We got pretty beaten up at the start of the tournament for various reasons but in the last part of the tournament, we were really comfortable. We made some changes around. We were sure about what style we are going to play going into the season.  The challenge we had was we weren’t sure where we are gonna play. More importantly, we weren’t at Chennai then we had to make sure we had good options and game plans going forward. So, we worked really hard in Dubai on that, made sure we made the most of the opportunities. We finished that tournament well.”

To be honest, we were only 1 or 2 games away from getting through so it wasn’t really a disaster. So we took a look at that and then in the off-season we looked to fit in do the job. We need to play a faster game, keep evolving if we are not in Chennai. We are not finished product but we are playing well at the moment,” Fleming said.

Fleming was delighted to have Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad in top form.

“The both skilful players are in really good form. Faf, in particular, outstanding form at the stage of the career. He is going strength to strength and he is really comfortable with the way he is playing and then helps his young partner. T20 is about confidence, when you are batting with confidence and you looking for positive options rather and today was good conditions to bat and the boys played really well, their assessment was pretty good and built up a really good partnership which does the competition up. If you look at the teams that have done well in the past is based on the heavy top order and at the moment getting life easy,” he added.

Speaking about Gaikwad’s form, Fleming opined, “It is easy on the eye, less risk and pretty effective. There is no pressure as the confidence grows. We had no doubt how good he [Gaikwad] is going to be. To be honest, he is really self-efficient. He has got string purpose and simple in his game plan. The method in which he trains is really refreshing.  We are excited about having him in the squad.”

Speaking about R Jadeja’s form and his impact in the last few matches, Fleming further stated, “He’s a key member of this side. He is at the peak of his powers and in that last game, you cannot ask for much more. He is training very hard. We are very lucky to have him right now at the prime of his career.”
