IPL 2021 – Bad Start for Delhi CapitalsBad news is continuing for Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2021 campaign. After captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out with a shoulder injury that will need surgery, spinner Axar Patel has tested positive for COVID-19, ruling him out of the first two matches at least. This is their second blow – which makes everyone ask is DC heading towards what Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went through in IPL 2020.

On Saturday, Delhi Capitals were in for a rude shock as Axar Patel, who entered DC team bubble directly from Team India bio-secure bubble following India vs England series, returned positive for COVID-19 in the second test done on April 1. Following the positive result, Axar Patel will be isolated for 10 days while he will be tested again on April 8 as per the BCCI SOP of IPL 2021. He is the second player to test positive for COVID-19 following Kolkata Knight Riders’ Nitish Rana.

However, despite the fact that Axar joined the DC bubble directly from the India team and tested positive for COVID-19 has puzzled the team management. “Axar gave a test on April 1 and confirmed positive on April 3. It is his second test. The third test will happen on April 8. He has been isolated. We are a little shocked as he had entered from bubble to bubble,” the source told InsideSport.

As for Delhi Capitals, who have named Rishabh Pant as their new captain for the season in absence of Shreyas Gopal, this is a major blow. Axar, who made waves in the Test series against England, scalping 27 wickets, will now have to wait to make an impact in the IPL 2021. He is a crucial cog in the DC team with his all-round abilities. But his contribution will now depend on his condition from the disease.

“Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar Patel has tested positive for COVID-19. He had checked into the team hotel in Mumbai on March 28, 2021, with a negative report. His report from the second COVID test came positive. He is currently in isolation at a designated medical care facility. The Delhi Capitals medical team is in constant touch with Axar and ensuring his safety and well-being. We wish him a speedy recovery,” Delhi Capitals said in a statement on Saturday.

COVID-19 strikes IPL – CSK in 2020 and DC in IPL 2021

However, this is not the first time that a team has been hit hard by COVID-19. In IPL 2020 that was played in the UAE, two Chennai Super Kings players Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad tested positive for COVID-19 amongst other team members. That quickly escalating situation wasn’t taken lightly by two players — Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh who pulled out of the IPL 2020 citing personal reasons.

CSK ended up with their worst campaign ever in the tournament, finishing seventh in an eight-team competition as MS Dhoni’s men failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history.

While it’s too early to say, the series of bad news could be a bad omen for Delhi Capitals as well. Not only they will miss Shreyas Iyer for the entire tournament, as he will undergo surgery, they will also miss two frontline pacers in Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje for the first two matches. The South African duo will be with the national team squad for the ODI series against Pakistan till April 4 and will only leave by April 5. As they will have to spend a seven-day mandatory quarantine period, they will miss the 1st match against Chennai Super Kings on April 10 and likely the second match against Rajasthan Royals on April 15.
